6ft Kerplunk How come there's VAR at Forrest's ground for the FA Cup match? Thought it was only supposed to be for the Premier League grounds that have it every match.

I wondered that. Probably put in to help Liverpool get a result.
Though how that Forest penalty was turned down was odd. Didn't look at it veery long either.

Rule is it is put in place for all 1/4final games, guess that would be the same even if a L1 or L2 club had got there.

Still doesn't really sit right with me that it is used for some games and not all games.

Never a penalty and dragging of the foot guidance killed off any dispute. Correct decision.

I actually thought that was one of the best VAR calls I've ever seen. Exactly what the tech is supposed to be for. Looked to all the world like a penalty on first viewing and at most angles, but from behind the goal you can see him dangle his left foot into a contact he didn't have to make.

Side note - Michael Owen would have been totally fcuked by VAR. He made a career out of doing that.

TBF to the ref he got it right first time (not that Matterface or Dixon would have noticed on commentary) but who knows if that was a consequence of VAR and in the past he might have waded in and just given it?

Wolves are getting wound ip with the disallowed goal, but it was clearly a foul.
The fact that a dozen others the same weren’t given as fouls is somewhat irrelevant

How is that not a red card for Steve Cook? Literally took it off Kane's head.

I am seriously confused

If Cook deliberately handles the ball inside the edge of the area with Kane about to receive the ball with just the keeper to beat, it’s a guaranteed red
Punch the ball off Kane’s head six inches from the goal … no, it OK, you crack on

Thought Newcastle could have been given a penalty for the shirt pull. Anywhere else on the pitch and it’s a foul

Think the Schar yellow card was a bit questionable. Again, you ask different refs, different scenarios and it’s a red card. Lack of consistency from VAR evident once again

A big improvement. Debut of 'semi-automated VAR', which takes subjectivity out of the decision, and makes that decision in seconds rather than minutes.

Used to disallow two goals in the CL last night.

As I understand it, the cost is significantly higher, but given the money sloshing around the CL (and the PL for that matter) it should be a given

What does the semi-automated entail? I would assume for offsides?

Yep, semi-automated because the technology determines the actual offside position. Takes the subjectivity out of when the ball was passed and whether a limb or part of a limb is offside. Will still need referees' input re a player being active, for example in cases where a player is 'onside' until they make an attempt to play the ball, like Bonucci at the weekend.

Cool, hopefully it’ll improve things then.

Still requires the system to 'know' when the ball is kicked, and that's definitely been a problem in the past

Should be much better, though

I think that's where the AI component comes in. You show it thousands of clips of players playing or not playing the ball and tell it which is which, and the more data it analyses the better it learns to recognise which is which for itself.

Sounds about right

Can they do ball in and out of play as well ?
