This all sounds rather expensive. Why not just have a camera built into the post...

So long as someone is actually watching that camera and relaying the information, Slammed. It's how they do that, that's the real problem, I think.

Cos if its there's a player(s) on the line the camera might not see the incident fully.

2 cameras in each post and 3 in the cross bar.

You still can't guarantee that you get the picture evidence you need. If the ball is crossing the line and the keeper happens to be diving on top of it you might not capture it. Anything less than a 100% accurate system is no better than a ref.

brendywendy pfff

ok, ok. get two acorn electrons.

or, the ref can over rule in th eevent of a phase of play/interfering with play incident

I've just realised as well, if the chip is in the boot what happens if the player uses another part of the body, head or chest for example to pass the ball?

then the puter will register that the ball has been struck, but not with boot and assign it to the closest player
or summink

The killer for the great offside solution is definitely that it isn't an offence for an attacker to be nearer the opposition goal than the second last defender.

The really difficult bit is the 'active play' bit, and you will NEVER find a way of automating that.

Football's rules aren't perfect anyway so we shouldn't be precious about them.

It's extremely simple. Just change the rules so that they suit what a computer CAN do. We'll get used to it after a while.

SLAMMED 2 cameras in each post and 3 in the cross bar.

Or have a couple of sensors built into the goal and a chip inside the ball. Doesn't require someone watching. Less equipment required. Instantaneous alert to the ref.

Sounds fine to me. Cuts out the middleman. It doesn't have to pick up everything, just give the referee more information for him to make the call.

Is that what was trialled at Reading?

Ceratinly was.

It's really no different to what happened in 1870, when the tape between the top of the posts was replaced with a wooden bar. Using new technology to make things easier for the referee.

I'm fairly sure the technology to install wood horizontally had been developed prior to 1870 !!

Now replacing hankies with the new fangled Acme Thunderer WAS a step forward !!!!

Perhaps it had, but no-one throught to use it across the top of goals until Sheffield Utd did in 1870.

In fact, the idea of tape didn't come in until 1865, and the FA laws of 1866 say it "extends from one goal-post to the other at a height of 8 feet from the ground." Don't forget there wasn't a single set of laws until 1877.

I'm pretty sure the sort of chip and sensor technology just suggested isn't exactly a ground breaking advance at the forefront of modern technological progress right now either.

But how is the sensor going to know exactly when the ball is played forward and where the attacker are at that precise moment? Fine! A sensor can tell us where everyone is one the pitch at any given moment but not what one is doing in relation to someone elses actions.

As long as it can tell the position of the ball relative to the goal line, posts and cross bar there isn't an issue in terms of any realistic proposals is there ?
