the dream scenario for me here is that Cadiz are successful in their appeal, the PL/FA panic over this, see that this could get messy and so abandon VAR completely

YorkshireRoyal99
Winston Biscuit Cadiz have requested to replay their game against Elche from Monday night from the 81st minute onwards after the VAR team didn't pick up an offside player on the goal they conceded. The draw meant they stayed in the bottom 3 but its so tight down there that a win would have seen them move up 4 places.

They say they will take legal action against La Liga if they cannot replay it

player in white on the right of the screen about to have the ball played to him

I think they've got every right to ask because it's clearly a wrong decision in what is a black or white decision.

However, where does the book stop with things like this? The only problem I can see then is clubs demanding replays for all decisions that they feel go against them, particularly offsides, such as Wolves at Anfield in the FA Cup.

I do like your Yorkshire verbal interpretation of the word "buck" appearing in print as "book".
'Appen I can just 'ear the dialect from reading it.

Howard Webb's selection of 5 or 6 recent VAR calls / overturns was properly interesting on Monday Night Football last night. Video and audio from the match refs and assistants, plus all those working on that match at Stockley Park. Really insightful into just how much communication goes on during the game. Loved how gutted the lino was, who incorrectly called Joelinton's goal offside, even though he looked miles offside, and the support he got from the other lino who praised him for following the correct procedure. Webb's a great ambassador for it.

Yep, saw some clips on twitter this morning - very interesting. Would certainly like to see more of that.

OK, I appreciate I'm extremely late to the party but I was shocked to see that it's not just the PL refs that leave basically every marginal decision to VAR. Those in Europe are just as bad (if that's the right word)
Example, and there were lots of them this week, the second Brighton penalty, which couldn't have been more of a penalty, yet the referee completely ignores it and lets VAR intervene.

Yep. It'll end up breeding referees who are too scarfed to actually ever make a decision themselves.

The audacity of pointing at the ball as well.

Hope he gets a retrospective ban.

So VAR’s done now yeah? Or is everyone fine with it because it was Liverpool?

I cannot fathom why the protocol doesn’t stipulate the methodology of
“Check over”
followed by
“No offside”

This particular issue would then not have arisen at all.

Simply saying “check over” and somehow assuming that the goal had been given in the first place is beyond incompetent

Heard the tackle was only late as he had to wait for clearance from air traffic control.

Not fine with it at all, but to suggest VAR is done when it has actually ensured that 99% of close offside decisions are called correctly is a bit nonsensical.

If it were to be done away with we’d have Sky developing their own system for drawing lines and spending hours debating the mistakes made by officials, completely undermining them - I’m not sure anyone would want that.

What I don't get is why the officials that did the Spurs/Liverpool game were part of a team sent by the PGMOL to Saudi on Thursday to officiate/advise over there, hardly makes sense to risk tiredness and also the reputation of the PL in stupid things like that during the British season.

Also isn't Hooper the same ref who sent off MacAllister only to have that decision overturned and then did the Wolves/ManU game? Hardly a glowing record there!

This debate isn't about a close offside decision though.

Yep. Hooper has now been 'stood down' twice this season.
