Tottenham have emerged as strong favourites to sign Hoffenheim's Iceland international Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The 22-year-old had looked set to join up with former boss Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool following a successful loan spell under him at Swansea last season.

But while Liverpool began negotiations over a deal, the midfielder is expected to move to White Hart Lane.

Spurs will pay around £8m for the player, who is poised to undergo a medical in the next 24 hours.

The deal is unlikely to be confirmed until 1 July but barring a last-minute change of heart, Liverpool look likely to miss out on one of their principal transfer targets

Now this is why I would not be so incredibly downhearted. It would appear that Gylfi for us was a target of opportunity (even if we REALLY wanted him), whereas he seemed to be someone Rodgers despearately wanted. We have other targets that were probably planned all along. It was said somewhere else that we only bid after Rodgers left Swansea. We still have our original list.

New information!!!!

1. Sadly I have been told Reading are out of the race to sign Sigurdsson. The club has been notified of this and has withdrawn from the race.

2. Gylfi has not agreed to join Spurs

3. Spurs have the best offer but Liverpool has a big appeal because of BR and could raise their offer this week.

Its down to Spurs and Liverpool now.

Well your track record is excellent so I am gutted. I still really don't understand how Rodgers is going to fit him in at LFC as well as Gerrard. Time will tell I guess and we can only assume that Gylfi will have got assurances from Rodgers that he will play. If not he might as well have gone back to Hoffenheim and sat on the bench.

Just hope he doesn't come to regret a mov to LFC if Rodgers gets fired in 6 months or so. History has a habit of repeating itself.

I hope he chooses Spurs at the last minute.
