ESPN "study" shows that this season in the PL that VAR officials have made 20 (TWENTY) erroneous decisions which, to be honest, is utterly inexcusable. Same study apparently shows that Liverpool have been on the receiving end of 4 of those decisions with Brighton and Wolves next on 3 apiece and the Arse with 2. Conversely, Villa (3 times) and United, Forest and Arsenal (all twice) have benefitted the most from those decisions.

Something needs to be done, this cr@p is undermining the game and bringing it into disrepute. It cannot be allowed to go on.

Fwiw, the same study showed that the count this time last season was 25, albeit I doubt Howard Webb will be celebrating that 'improvement'.

What is particularly telling was that of those 20, 17 of the errors were VAR not intervening to correct an on-field decision (as oppose to intervening incorrectly), which a cynic might consider alongside Mike Dean's comments about 'protecting' colleagues.

20 is a large number in isolation but what is that in terms of a percentage of all decisions made by VAR? Whatever process you put in place you are never going to get 0 mistakes but is that 20 errors in 200 decisions or 2000 decisions? And how does that compare to the number of errors made when only the onfield officials made a call.

There does need to be a change in the way VAR is used, particularly in England, which seems to be using it in a different way to other European leagues which has led to the perception that is terrible, even when it isn't.

Ok see the article does state some of these. In the last season before VAR 82% of all decisions were accurate whereas now 96% are accurate. So a 4% error rate.

That is still too high, am sure they will be looking for a 1 or 2% error rate at most but whilst the time it takes to review and other areas need work, accuracy is showing a massive improvement as a result of VAR.

Should not the referee be allowed officiate the game, as if there is no VAR. and it's then for that official to call for assistance, when there is obvious controversy, by stopping the game when the ball next goes "dead".

Two absolute howlers in the Luton v Sheff utd game, both pens and both from corners, no on field appeals, I`m assuming he gave the second because he got the first one wrong.
Take a bow Paul Tierney for taking VAR fuck ups to a whole new level.
What staggers me is the refs in these instances never have the balls to stick to their original decisions.

Now I’m completely sure that the VAR team are incompetent.
To say that they “both went in high” is so far away from the reality that we can all see, that the officials should never officiate in any capacity again.
If you make that decision in real time (as Michael Oliver did) then that’s one thing, but to look at it numerous times and come up with that is unforgivable

And Howard Webb has reverted to type in simply trying to defend the officials even when it’s patently obvious that they’re explanation for the decision were factually inaccurate

They tried that at the women's World Cup and it was a huge opportunity missed. For a judgemental handball, where it had clearly hit an arm but people were not convinced it was handball, they would simply say to the crowd "It is a handball, penalty". They didn't communicate what really mattered about whether they thought it was intentional, whether the arm was in a natural position etc.,

Totally meaningless communication. Hopefully they do better this time.

Fresh from watching two pulsating Champions League semi finals were VAR wasn't used once, despite numerous goals, and penalties awarded......

We move on to Chelsea vs Spurs, where Chelsea score a goal, that is so obviously not offside, the VAR just sits there for a while, as we all stare at a screen that clearly shows not offside, then moves to reviewing whether there was any obstruction, and we watch two players merely battle a bit, unrelated to the flight of the ball.

I was just sat there thinking, how is the Premier League ballsing this up so much, and how is the Champions League getting it so right.

What was even more strange was it was an english VAR / ref team for Dortmund PSG, but there were no interventions. Feels like a higher power tells UEFA match day officials completely different parameters of when to intervene and when not to.

It's ludicrous. This is meant to be a tool to resolve contentious moments and areas of "unsurety". I don't know what PGMOL has been telling its officials but to me it seems they're being told to not referee or make decisions or if they're not told that they seem to let VAR decide everything for them. IMO the officials should officiate normally, as if there is no such thing as VAR, and VAR should only be used if they are uncertain and then only at their request unless a ******* big error has been made in which case they should stop the game (that's the other issue the utterly ridiculous amount of time it takes the VAR staff to come to any decision).

The problem we've seen this season, particularly, is idiots on VAR duty totally ****** things up after officials seem to have made the right calls or giving the officials the wrong decision after studying things from god knows how many angles and at different speeds. Neither is there much accountability and clear punishment taken against the idiots who do **** it all up. And just relegating them to the FL is hardly fair on FL teams. They should serve match suspensions and/or be sent for further training/reminders and if they have x strikes in a season they should be "struck off".

There really needs to be much more open refereeing and officials should not ALWAYS be supported by PGMOL, they should be called out when they drop a ricket. Of course they're not helped by the complete stupidity of organisations like IFAB who seem to go out of their way to fix things that really don't need to be fixed and make everything as confusing and open to as much subjective interpretation as possible.

Finally it is cretinous that clubs can appeal a red card but can't appeal when it's a "two yellow red card", that really needs to be changed.
