Southampton unable to pay wages

Southampton FC have been unable to pay their players or staff in May, as their financial problems continue to mount, BBC Radio Solent understands.

Office staff were told that their monthly salaries had not been paid at a meeting on Thursday.

The troubled club remain in talks with four groups of investors, with administrator Mark Fry hoping for a resolution in the next seven days.

Southampton's parent company went into administration in April.

Ouch. Not a good position for anyone.

Are staff entitled to walk out and get another job because they haven't been paid?

The very real possibility of getting that extra 20 point deduction can't be too far away now, shirley? Is there an offer on the table yet? When's the deadline? When's the lols?

Most of them would have handed their notice in ages ago if they could, slight lack of other jobs to go to right now I suspect !

Not paying staff is a fundamental breach of contract, so yes, they could walk without penalty. That said and as Sun Tzu points out, where would they go? IMO, this also provides evidence of an inextricable link between holding company and club, which may well scupper any remaining chance of an appeal against a points deduction

I do sympathise with the staff, but as far as the club is concerned, I can't help but feel a pang of schadenfeude. I still remember the Saints advertising the attractions of their "First Division" side in Reading some years ago. I also remember a Saints fan on the BBC post results phone-in, lamenting that his team had been knocked out by "Mickey Mouse" Reading, following our FA Cup triumph in the winter of 1996-1997.

They need an agreed CVA before the season starts - that's the first week of August. I'm not sure how much money is owed to HMRC - if they are not paid off at 100p in the pound then they will not agree to the CVA, and a points deduction will be made.

I thought it was an extra 15 points, though (may be wrong on this one!).

Were the 17pts to Rotherham and Bournemouth due to not getting CVAs or was there another reason...

The 17 points were the penalty for being "unable to satisfy the normal conditions of Football League rules for exiting administration" - i.e. not being able to agreee a CVA with their creditors.

The deadline is noon on the Friday before teh season starts - i.e. 7th August this year.

eddiegrundy Can you name three ships that have left Southhampton never to return?

Titanic

Premiership

Championship

(Nicked from another message board but worth a repeat)

Time to rename League One and League Two Sinkingship and Abandonship, then.

Current rumours are that Pinnacle are very close to completing a take over of the club and that Kevin Keegan may be returning as manager...

So now the deadline's passed and the deal's fallen through due to the Football League not agreeing to dropping the 10 point deduction (a crazy stipulation if you ask me), what now for Southampton FC?

Breaking News - Pinnacle Group now pulled out. This club is in a right mess and now in real danger of going out of business. Incredible.

That's a disaster for Southampton, you'd have think they'd just accept the 10 point penalty and geton with it. 10 point penalty >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> out of business.

Doubtless there are some on here that will rejoice, but that's terrible news IMHO.

They are in serious danger of playing in Conference next season or folding totally.

But doesn't there have to be a cut off date? If they did leave the FL and went to the Conference then that presumably means that Crewe and Chester would be reprieved from relegation .

However as the fixtures are all sorted for the FL, I can't see that happening as it could mean a complete set of new fixtures for all clubs.

So as I don't think the Conference fixtures are out yet, that would mean a 25 team Conference which would make for a longer season and and an extra promotion place to the FL at the end of it.
