Dirk Gently Not devalued to the family and friends of those subject to the tribute, no - but who are they? I have no knowledge of who I'm being asked to pay tribute to, which makes clapping along pretty much a tickbox thing - there's no sincerity involved because there's no knowledge or relationship.

That's just basic empathy. If you're not sincerely showing empathy, don't join in, if you don't want to. Or do. Whatever.

As to not understanding what people get out of it. Let's hope you and I and others never have to find out.

Dirk Gently
But to the family and friends of Sir Alex, Gazza or Gary Lineker - and, by extension, the countless football supporters who know and love/respect them - surely any tribute means a lot less if there's one every match?

No, why would it? If I happen to be at a match in the future and want to pay some respects or admiration to Gazza, I don't see why that would be impacted because there was another applause for someone who worked for the club for 40 years.

I don't get why this would bother anyone. It's like having a problem with postmen wearing shorts.

I understand what people get out of it, but to me it just feels artificial, forced and insincere.

Then don't join in, if you don't sincerely feel empathy.

But we're usually not talking about someone who worked for the club for 40 years - that's part of football and I'd be happy to celebrate their achievements.

It's being asked to applaud some anonymous person who I know nothing about who I'm told happened to support the same football club as me that feels forced and insincere to me. I feel a fraud because I know whatsoever about them and their life so my clapping along feels meaningless and insincere. If it makes other people happy then fair enough, but I know it wouldn't make my loss any less to have numerous unknown strangers clapping for the life of someone completely unknown to them.

Doesn't particularly "bother me", though. The question was posed on this discussion forum, so I gave my thoughts as part of that discussion. Didn't start a thread, rasie the topic or call for them to be banned, just said that I'm not a great fan of them.

Totally irrelevant, you haven't suffered the loss.

I don't know him, but there better be a minutes applause for Blackie when he shuffles off.

I agree with everything you've said, except don't join in. Do join in, show some bloody respect whether you genuinely empathise or not.

Different people grieve in different ways. Just because you don’t know someone doesn’t mean you can't show some empathy for the people who did and are missing them.

So what if its a bit mawkish or performative. Its one minute of clapping or silence.
