Smoking Kills Dancing Doe There's no other capable Englishmen of doing the job. Should have been Allerdyce, but we all know why he didn't get the job (I hope his son's happy).

Mourinho should be offered the world to manage England. Is a massive shame Wenger seems set to stay at Arsenal now.

He shouldn't go yet. But he has to go regardless of if we qualify. Maybe not if we win it, but we know it would be 1/4 finals at best. He's not an international manager, he's is not good enough to manage England. The FA shot themselves in the foot by trying to appoint a Brit, then clearly after thinking none of them were good enough, panicked and fcuked up with Scolari.

From now until this campaign comes to an end Barwick should ringing every top manager in Europe offering the job, it undermines McClaren, but again, he's never was and never will be an international manger.

The real shame is the people who deserve the sack the most, the international committee, will get away with the problems they have created. McClaren should never have got the job.

Concur entirely, alas, not many folk are as like minded.

Bravo.

Promoting assistants is often the easy route but not often the successful one.
As with McLaren following Sven read Sammy Lee following Allardyce.
I reckon about 95% of football fans thought that selecting McLaren was a poor decision and although the players must accept the blame equally with McLaren he surely is not the answer.

Today he did what he did with Middlesborough when chasing the game-throw on a load of forwards and pray for something to happen-never mind the shape of the team and getting in crosses from out wide to these strikers, just pump it forward and hope.
This is not progressive football and will never win us an international competition-at times we look like a team from the dark ages, devoid of real craft and playmaking.

Yes to McLaren going but don't expect any new manager to come in and wave a magic wand-the players need to improve as well for any real success to happen.
I have seen England win a big competition in my lifetime-don't hold your breath most of you that it will ever happen in yours.

an element of people wouldn't be in favour i'm sure.

No one doubts or has ever doubted the ex translators credentials as a manager. There is a reason he was hated as much as he was, because he was in charge of the most loathsome club in the country. A club that wants to become the 'biggest brand' a club ran by a crook and has utter tarts like Lampard and Ashley 'Arsenal till he dies' Cole in it. I'm sure as a Chelsea fan you just want results on the pitch and don't really care what others think, tbh that's fair enough. As a bit of a neutral i hate what Chelsea have become and what they want to become. It sums up what is wrong with modern day football imo.

They have taken over from Man Utd as the number 1 club in this country at something - at being hated by everyone else!!

Mourinho is one of those people you hate unless he is managing your team. Only man that could handle the pressure at this moment in time IMO.

This country needs a major restructuring of it's national game. Top down. Starting with Barwick. We need fresh faces with fresh ideas. Brooking has to be the biggest culprit at the FA. Always pointing out problems, but never having a solution. He keeps going on about youth football in this country, what's he done about it? He's like the annoying pub player who never marks anyone but is always pointing out there's a free man in the box.

We also have to move away from the negativity that has haunted every England manager since Robson. That is down to the press as much as anyone. Martin Samuel wrote a great piece about it last year, people, especially journalists want England to lose just so they can moan about it.

I think that last sentence is key, Mourinho is the sort of person that would tell the press to fcuk off. He'd almost be above any criticism and he'd probably quite enjoy the limelight from it. Above all he's an excellent manager and would get the best out of the underachieving players in the squad.

When are people going to realise that there is a world of difference between being a club manager and an international manager?

The former can choose from whichever players his team can afford, whilst the latter faces massive numbers of obstacles - such as the fact that there are far fewer players to choose from, they're only with you for 10 days max at a time, and they're not actually paid by you - with a few exceptions, their loyalty is always very much with their club.

I've always been of the opinion that managers at international level don't do a great deal. You've got what you're given or whats available. You can't sign anyone so it's literally how you prepare and decide how to paly that is their influence. If you are England manager you won't be coaching much, what can you coach into top players in the space of 9-10 days? Not a lot.

I've always thought Stuart Pearce would make a good international manager. Someone that would put the pride and passion back and he's doing a decent job with the u21s. Also he couldn't sign anyone!!!

English managers in the Premiership currently:

Steve Bruce
Lawrie Sanchez
Gareth Southgate
Sam Allardyce
Harry Redknapp
Steve Coppell
Alan Curbishley
Chris Hutchings

I think if it was going to be one of them, I would pick Curbishley. Big Sam I just don't think is an international boss. I think Redknapp and Coppell are too excellent managers, but I can't see them taking the job. Doesn't look good to be honest. I've said all along Guus Hiddink, but he's about to sign a new 2 year contract with Russia. The one person I would love to see as England manager would be Jose Mourinho, I agree with SKDD, we should offer him the world to manage England. Stuart Pearce I think should be considered.

That's what they all said about Kevin Keegan - he had the pride and passion, but he was a tactical numpty (and eventually admitted it!)

Keegan's philosophy was always 'well score 1 more than you' easy when you are Fulham manager in the 2nd division with a huge budget.

Pearce is learning his trade, i'm sure he'll be a decent manager one day and probably suited to international football IMO.

McLaren should only be sacked if we don't qualify. I know we're all upset about not winning in Russia but the group stages aren't over yet.

Give the guy a chance, i'm confident we can beat Croatia and Russia will lose points somewhere so let's bloody keep faith.

Oh and by the way, Reading>England.

Pearce couldn't get the best out of the players he had at City and he couldn't buy a player to fit his team and get him goals.

I don't think he could cut it as an International Manager.

I think an England manager needs to be a tactician, understand how to get the best out of the players he has and develop a method of playing that suits his resources.

Hoddle was an excellent international manager. His man-managment let him down, as did the FA big wigs who let him do his world cup diary. El Tel was a pretty decent manager too. You could see the players understood what he wanted them to do, and he understood what he needed them to do.

Clough and Shankly used to buy players for what they were good at and get them to bring that into their sides. They identified players that would had strengths to match and complement the rest of their team. Ramsey seemed to have that same quality of perception with England.

Thats what makes an international manager, the ability to build a team by undertanding the components that combine to make that team. Allardyce seems to have that knack. He gets the best out of his team by getting the best out of players. O'Neil seems pretty similar.

I normally agree with what AP says, but sorry, Stuart Pearce for manager - you must be aving a larf me old china.

Man City were a shambles under Pearce, I can't see him doing any better with England.

Didn't say now but one day.

Judge him on u21s not his City job where it would be totally different to managing an International team.
