rg6royal 1-0 Holland

What a complete cock-up from the linesman!

11.11 DEFENDER LEGALLY OFF THE FIELD OF PLAY
A defender who leaves the field during the course of play and does not immediately return must still be considered in determining where the second to last defender is for the purpose of judging which attackers are in an offside position. Such a defender is considered to be on the touch line or goal line closest to his or her off-field position. A defender who leaves the field with the referee's permission (and who thus requires the referee's permission to return) is not included in determining offside position.

Told ya!!!

I hope all the commentators and pundits apologise for their ineptitude. They deserve the sack for there 'expert' opinion!

readingbedding It's not the end if the Italians lose this, from what I've seen they can beat France and they can do negative and sterile better than anyone and could pip Romania.

I wouldn't count it mate. I think Romania have a good game plan and will try to do what they did to the french today.

Don't be silly, commentators will never mention it and fans will therefore forever talk of the ridiculous linesman's decision. This kind of thing happens all the time, 'pundits' often get it wrong and dno't bother actually reading up to see if they are right or not.

Definately offside. The funny thing was that Van Nistelrooy even knew it as he was looking at the linesman for about 10 seconds waiting for him to put his flag up!!

This element's not confusing at all though, and it's always been this way.

I've had it a few times in local park football.

That's been part of the offside law for donkey's years. I remember one of Stuart McCall's goals in the 1989 Cup Final being allowed for exactly the same reason, Cottee, on the line in an "offside" position, hurdles the ball, getting in the way of a defender at the same time but a Liverpool defender was on his arse in the back of the net. (Incidently, the game that contains my favourite Motty statto cock up of all time. Motty, all smugness and light, "Ian Rush becomes the first substitute to score twice in an FA Cup final" then rather more sheepishly, "err, ummm since Stuart McCall about 5 minutes ago")

Whether the players themselves are aware at the moment of the off-field player playing them onside is debatable but an absolutely spot on decision by the lino all the same. It's the players and pundits who don't know the laws in this instance, not the officials

Correction, the goal I'm thinking of where Cottee hurdled the ball on the line was in the 1989 Simod Cup Final against Forest.
