Ex-boss Rodgers to be next Pompey manager?
by Sportsdesk
Back in work? Former Reading boss Brendan Rodgers is in the running to take over at Portsmouth.
FORMER Reading boss Brendan Rodgers could become the next manager of Portsmouth.
Pompey today confirmed the 37-year-old Northern Irishman is among the candidates being considered for the Fratton Park hotseat.
Rodgers has been out of work since he was sacked by Reading in December following a poor start to the last Championship season.
Recent reports hinted at a possible move to Manchester City to join Roberto Mancini's coaching staff or to Ipswich Town to assist Roy Keane.
But Rodgers says it is the Portsmouth number he really wants.
"I am flattered to be linked with Portsmouth," he told the Portsmouth Evening News.
"Any manager without a club at the moment would love to be involved with something like that. It's a fantastic club with great supporters and I am sure it will rise again.
"From my perspective, I would love the challenge of taking over. Speaking to Avram (Grant), he would always tell me how the fans would always back their manager.
"I've taken six months out, been around a few clubs and am now hungry to get back into a club which has ambition."
Reading paid Watford around £500,000 compensation to lure Rodgers to the Madejski Stadium last summer.
He lasted just 21 league games but many of his signings turned out to be successful like Ryan Bertrand, Matt Mills, Jobi McAnuff and Brian Howard.
He also blooded youngsters like Simon Church, Jem Karacan, Alex Pearce and Player of the Season Gylfi Sigurdsson
Rodgers, who previously worked with Avram Grant at Chelsea, stated: 'It depends on what the club wants for its next manager.
"If they want a young manager with ambition and passion who has worked with players at the highest level and wants to give his all, then I would be really interested.
"If they want an experienced manager with many years behind him then I would not stand much of a chance.
"Whoever takes over, it is a wonderful opportunity to create history at a fantastic football club. And I would love that opportunity."
Rodgers would be no stranger on the Pompey's Eastleigh training ground either.
"I actually know some of the players there from working with them before, such as Tommy Smith and Tal Ben-Haim," he added.
"I popped down to see Avram a few times at the training ground at the end of last season and was always impressed by the players.
"I would love to go back there and work everyday."

FiNeRaInRoyal With Cheese Roy Keane doesn't like him - and that's good enough for me.
Rodgers is very good mates with Roy Keane
Rodgers even said that in an interview last season that he speaks to him a fair bit.

The Goat was fed "Speaking to Avram...." YAWN
"I've taken six months out" - like he chose to do so as part of his career masterplan!
Such an arrogant tool.

The Goat was fed Is this the same Brendan Rodgers who is nailed on for a job at:
a) Milton Keyes
b) Ipswich
c) Man City
If his talent for self promotion was matched by his managerial ability he would indeed be the new Jose Mourinho (who is, of course, Brendan's best friend).
