The media* haven't been saying it for ages. Fans never think England are going to win any more either, so why do so many still talk as if people in England routinely believe we are the best in the world?

About the closest you get is Sky News going into a pub full of England fans and shouting "who's going to win?" and getting them to shout "England!!!!" back.

I watched the Champions League and for two year's solid they told us that Beckham, Joe Cole, Lampard and Beckham was the best midfield in the world and that everybody rated John Terry as a defender, so we were definitely among the favourites. James Milner is a decent player. Typical buying into the bullshit that will rise to unbearable levels when the tournament starts.
