Sarah Star Considering McDermott said at the last fans' forum he did that he thought Sonko's injury had affected him and he wouldn't sign him, I'd be surprised if we signed him now. If we do it smacks of desperation and strengthens my belief that he really didn't want Mills to go. I'll be interested to see what he says about it at the next fans' forum which should be coming up in the next month or so.

This thread has become the same old shit about half the fans wanting us to spend shed loads of money (e.g leicester).
Sonko's on trial, it's up to him to prove his worth. If he impresses, we'll sign him on (i'd guess) a cheap 1 year deal.
Even if he's not as good as before, he'll still be a good role model for the youngsters, and he's a good guy, always seems positive.
He said on sky sports that he's not concerned about money, just wants to play. That's a good attitude too.
I swear half the idots on this site haven't got a clue about football and would be the first ti complain if ticket prices went up to fund expensive signings. If you really don't like it, support chelsea or man city!!

We just failed to get promotion last year, falling at the final hurdle. Some clubs would look at that situation and say "Right, we're nearly there - let's do what we can to make the improvements necessary to go one step further". Not Reading, we just sell up and throw the towel in........................

I have no problem paying a bit extra on my season ticket to watch a team giving it a real go, rather than just going through the motions to midtable nothingness.

I'd have more patience with this view if it wasn't a repeat of what you and others were saying after the sale of Gylfi and the subsequent loans and cheap buys. The season hasn't even started, but you're judging it based on the shopping competition. Let's wait and see how the team performs.

It's very easy to be so calm and considered from afar,it's not so easy for us in the hotbead just 13 days from the start of the new season.

Did the club not put the season ticket prices up before saying that it was needed for investment in to the team and yet no one was signed that season.

The obvious come back to that is that if we'd made a little more of a re-investment in the playing staff when Sigurdsson went, especially in a forward who could score or create chances before Christmas (when we really missed Sigurdssons influence on the team - in other words before lumping the ball down the line for Long to chase started paying off) we may well have finished with 6 or 7 more points.

Then where would we be now?

Some of the things he is saying here suggests he is confident of getting a deal and sounds like he actually wants to play for the club - which is good enough for me

'greed.

That face!!

The 30-year-old, who played 30 minutes as Royals beat Northampton Town 3-0 on Saturday, told the Reading Post: “It was nice to hear the fans call me Superman, but I would ask them to wait a bit before they can call me Superman again.

“I’ve got so much to prove. The fans will remember me from the past, but I’m trying to forget that, build a new future and be at my best.

“I’m sure the expectations amongst the fans will be high and given time I’m sure I can get back to my best.

“It’s really nice to be back and it has made me realise how much I have missed it - the atmosphere and that family feeling that's here at Reading.

“I spent so much time in Reading and I feel like I am home. It’s pretty much the same as when I left to be honest.”

Sonko is expected to start for Reading when they visit Bristol Rovers tomorrow night (7.30pm kick-off).

All good to hear.

You do have to be a little less literal with those posts though brendy. I think most people, when they say we don't ever sign anyone, are meaning we don't ever sign anyone to actually improve the team, as in actually start many games because the manager sees them as an improvement on the team they're coming in to.

We don't do a lot of that, especially in the January window.

Just for the record, the last time we didn't sign a (senior) player during a transfer window was January 2010 wasn't it? I can't think of anyone off the top of my head.

EDIT: Just checked and that's wrong, we got Kishanishvili and Griffin in on loan. I thought they were a bit earlier than that, being loan deals, but then Rodgers didn't get the boot 'til mid-December so it's just my memory playing tricks on me. We also signed Thorveldsson as well of course!

Good stuff..

Sonko wants to be here and to be fair he knows how the club works. Hes a good no nonsense defender ball comes in the box Ball gets walloped out of the box. I just hope he can be close to what he was when he left.

Plus he wants to be here..

Agreed - also, I reckon he wants to be here.

I'm sentimentally happy about this. I'll be utterly gobsmacked if he plays a large part in a successful season because, let's face it, he's never looked like a good championship-level defender since that day against Sheffield United. But since we're apparently not at all interested in spending even a million to replace Mills, we might as well get in cheap cover.

It means I can wear my Sonko-is-Superman t-shirt again, so it's all good.
