Brilliant. Room for another ex-Liverpool player to plague our tv screens.

Knowing ITV it will be someone from the BBC who's a bit long in the tooth and hurtling towards their sell by date at the speed of light. And they'll pay him 5 times what the BBC did.

My money's on Mark Lawrenson

I don't think that's possible, unless they sign up Ian Royal

Aren't ITV getting rid mainly as they won't have much in the way of live football from next season? Just England home internationals, isn't it?

The PL league rights are up for settlement again shortly. Believe the current deal ends at the end of next season. Hoping the BBC can keep the highlights side of things though.

Re; the England games, when is that contract up for renewal again, desperately hoping for the BBC to get it back....

Can't help but think that Townsend's punditry career has mirrored his international career. Bit of a mainstay in a poor to average lineup but only there because he's too shit for the bigger teams.

Back to Talk Sport then.

I'd certainly rather listen to him than most of the "presenters" they have on there.

Didn't he start quite well when he was an occasional use analyst not a co-commentator?

It must be hard to be used for commentating on most games. There's not a lot of room for variation in how you describe what happens on a football pitch. He was a shed load better than the likes of Lawrenson, but I wasn't keen.

+100s ... but then anyone ## would be an improvement on that godawful duo of Sam 'Makeupfacts' & Stan 'Cobblerbore' ...... numerous times I've found myself howling at the radio something along the lines of : "Shut the f£ck up and talk about the game you're supposed to be commenting on, as opposed to swamping us with your self-opinionated drivel! "

## excluding Alan Green obvs....

He's been great for creating commentating clichés that other commentators have copied, now everyone says "in and around", although his trademark "that's better" has yet to be err bettered.

Saggers, Quinn, Goldstein, Brazil and Durham are the ones who really get my goat.

Know what you mean but he is ok on his own it's just that anyone sharing airtime with Goldstein is likely to come across as a total knobhead.

... actually find him a welcome change from the prevalent 'TalkScouse' that fills virtually every other programme they put out !
(H&J being the obvious exception to the norm)

When Townsend and Parry had the mid-morning show on TalkSport it was actually quite entertaining. Townsend came across well.

Can't listen to any TalkSport live commentary. Matterface and Collymore consistently shout over each other. I never have any idea what is actually going. Also, very rarely do they actually commentate from the ground.
