Why would paying £5m + Church for Rhodes be a good deal?

Why is that rumour on a Sheffield United forum?

Royal Lady This is the thing - we must have known how much Huddersfield would want for him - but we still sent along McD and Hammond with the scout - just seemed strange to me.

All clubs scout a hell of a lot of players over a season, and managers and scouts will often go to games (especially local ones) just to watch a different game or to bump into some to build up their network of contacts.

I'm not saying that we're not interested in Rhodes, more just that the fact we had people there doesn't mean we're lining something up immediately.

As others have said, it's quite likely we're running our eye over him with a summer move in mind. A lot of our targets are apparently watched over a long period of time before we make a move.

Baseya was signed when we had no money and was worth a punt. Now we have an abundance of strikers and no need to sell every year I would of thought the club may decide to move him on or even at the end of the season. Williams has had quite a few injuries, left behind in pre-season because of his poor performance and we have Alfie who is a similar player. As for Hunt, No. How long does it take Manset to get fit??????

Isn't the point that we should get rid of one IF we sign Rhodes?!

i know im going to get a lot of abuse for this but hey ill say it anyway! i think church has probably been our most enterprising striker this season, he looks a lot more dangerous than hunt and hes got a bit more about him off the ball than alf. i think we should give him time! let the abuse begin!

He's got a lot more about him off the ball as he should have. I don't think anyone let's him have the ball in training.

Should a miracle occur and Rhodes come our way then I would say the striking options should be :

Rhodes
Roberts
Le Fondre
Church

Hunt I would say is someone who can be kept as an emergency striker or wing position, an impact player to bring off the bench and buzz around knackered defenders like a demented wasp as that is usually very effective.

The rest, I think, time is up on, perhaps you could argue to retain Manset but put him out on loan to Div 2/3 level to see how he develops but that would be dependent on his attitude and work ethic which only the management team will know.

Church looks capable and certainly gives 100% (but then so did Paul Brayson) and I would imagine this next 18 months or so will decide whether he has a future or not at Reading.

Overall if Reading are to make the Premiership they need to be building a squad of players that would not need too much alteration once they got there, so are any players - and not just those listed above - good enough to play consistently at that level.

Absolutely agree 100%. That could send us up with the midfield we have and a much improved, of late, defence.

Yeah. He's worked out how to be picked for a football team without having a clue how to play football. That's pretty fcking enterprising.

I think that's a tad harsh - I'm not a great fan of Church, but he's not that bad. I just think he lacks experience and confidence - ... it might take him a few more seasons. I remember thinking the same with Long a few years back and suddenly it clicked.

As said, Church will benefit more from having Roberts play......it will mean he doesn't have to be the target man and can be more of a poacher

I can see hitting the target being the next problem. Perhaps we can make the goals a bit bigger, or were you talking eggs?

Is it because they have played less games than him. Or even less minutes, as he is often subbed?
