rfc2001 ALF's finishes have been of a higher quality than church. END OF

I want to like Church because every now and again he does do something, but at the end of the day he is just NOT good enough and I can't see how we will improve. I've read people say he has a good touch, which I think is load of SH!T, if he did then he should use it more, be more dynamic, come short link play, creative himself an opening.

Some people are blind to ALF's passing and link play, this is want makes him a better player, O yeh and his finishing ability is better.

This wrong on so many levels that I am not sure it warrants any intellectual effort to counter it.

.. trouble is I can't resist.

Who gives a monkey's fart who has the better finishes. It is goals that count - regardless of how good the finish was. We had a night mare period with Tommy Burns bollocking the players for not scoring purist goals. As a result we scored too few.

Church may not be everyone's cup of tea but to mindlessly slag him off does you no credit.

and for that reason - I am out.

quality of finishes is an indication of how likely a player is to score regularly and frequently. But not a lot more I admit.

Why would we sign more strikers now? We'd have to get rid of Manset, and that would still leave us with 5. I think Roberts, Hunt, ALF and Church all have enough at this level if we invest in some creativity and service behind them.

We have too many strikers yes, we need to ofload some and yes we do need better service. That said we are supposed to be interested n Rhodes, along with everyone else in English football, and if the chance presents itself to get him we would be very foolish not to take it.

well lets look at what we have and where they are:

first choice
roberts, le fondre - you will get goals consistently from these guys if paired together.

starter back-up
hunt - suitable from bench, impact player, struggles for consistency.

fourth choice striker
church - shouldn't start, ok from bench if hunt isn't an option, otherwise i think he's very ineffective and could be time at the bar.

not in the picture
manset - unfit, problems off field, wont be here long
sheppard - one for the future, needs a loan move this season or next
baseya - cheap punt, work in progress, not going to be considered for first team this season. likely leave for free in summer imo.
bignall - not going to make it here.

i would argue, based on church's lack of goals and lack of pretty much anything else, that another striker (but a top striker, i.e sharp) is needed.

Thought Sheppard was meant to be nearly ready - given Euro games this season, and was just getting a rest?

I see your point, but it would strike me a little fantasy football like. Bring in a couple more strikers with good reputations without addressing our underlying goalscoring problem, which is the scraps they're being fed off.

It would only upset those who have made a decent attempt at making an impact this season. If you look at the goals Church, ALF and Hunt have between them this season, they really shouldn't be battling it out to be 3rd/4th choice. We've been a successful club through choosing evolution instead of revolution, and I don't think we should change that now that we have more resources.

I don't buy peoples opinion of saying "we already have 8 strikers". That is NOT the issue, as I said on the Billy Sharp threat. What we don't have is 8 quality strikers.

We have 3 main strikers now,

Roberts, ALF and Hunt.

Church should be on the fringe in my opinion.

If Rhodes were to come in he would be instantly a starter IMO. Which would mean we have 4 main strikers, no way too many in any way shape or form.

Agree 100%. However many players we have in any position if we have the chance of signing someone considerably better then surely that is the thing to do. I am not convinced there is much chance of us getting Rhodes but surely we can't say we won't even try because we have Church and Manset

Truth is yesterday we had 3 guilt-edged chances in the box in the first half that a confident striker would have put away with relative ease - our players couldn't even hit the ball, let alone the target for most of them. So in that sense, I'd say getting another proven goalscorer (assuming we're not playing ALF who I think fits that mould) is a key target. I would say though that getting a left-back is even more important - playing Griffin at the back is not the way to go even though he did OK yesterday.

100%. his attacking threat, linking up with either kebe or mcanuff would be a distinct advantage again.

I would drive down to london and pick bertrand up myself. Best left back we've ever seen at the club, ahead of shorey IMO.
