If you lay him for say £100, you can set the odds you want to offer. For example 10.0. Somebody can that accept those odds and has the ability to match £10 against it. So your liability is £100, but your profit will only be £10.

This is pretty much it... you are effectively acting as the bookie. I find lay betting most useful for arbitraging my original 'back' bets to guarantee profit, or at least mitigate losses.

someone probably would have, you see all sorts of mental odds and bets on the exchange. Some people go onto every new market and offer lay odds of 999/1 in the hope some mug will match them for a couple of pounds.

annoyed myself alot on the Real game,

Backed 0-0 @ 36 pre game for £5, with the aim of cashing out for somewhere about 4/1 if still 0-0 at half time. Decided to hang on til the 50th, then 60th, then 70th, then 80th minutes, started typing to fully lay back the other way at just under evens for a profit of £200 ish and hit the submit bet button about 5 seconds too late, just as the ball went wide to Ozil.

I was shouting all sorts of Francophobic things at the telly for the next five minutes.
