I'd be sacking the Architect tbh, looks like they've designed the worst of both worlds. Shallow single tier stands no better than the Withdump's on three sides and a three tier stand where the third tier will probably stay closed for 75% of the games, Great

That design is due to the need to be as inconspicuous as possible - they're in a hollow in an AONB (is it now a national park?) so the stands have to be shallow so as to not dominate the landscape - similarly they can't use the same sort of sticky-up roof supports that we and many others have.

So Brighton have built a stadium they can't expand later if the demand is there?

Architecturally it's built for expansion - they would need to get planning permission for that, though. But that would probably be a damn sight easier than getting the permission for the stadium in the first place.

Thanks Dirk. It's just you said that the design is due to the need to be as inconspicuous as possible, but if they added to the three single tier stands that kinda defeats the purpose of being inconspicuous.

Italian club build underground stadium

An Italian football club is trying to build an incredible new stadium that will be almost completely underground.

The incredible new ground is set to be built by architects Marazzi Architetti for Siena, who are currently on-course for promotion to Serie A this season.

The 21,000-seater venue will be sunk into the ground so as not to disturb the stunning scenery of Tuscany.

Marazzi explains that the idea behind the award-winning plan is to make the stadium "just like a Greek amphitheatre", with one side of the stadium to be a grassy slope rather than traditional plastic seating, with those on the other side of the stadium enjoying a wonderful view of the ancient hilltop city itself.

The various restaurants and souvenir shops of the modern stadium will be hidden inside what the architects refer to as an "inhabited roof", which sits alongside one side of the stadium. It is the only part of the stadium visible above ground level, but it will still blend in with the surroundings since the concrete structure is to be clad in local stone to make sure that it does not look out of place.


That grassy slope of a stand, surely freak heavy rainfall could be a problem.

A friend and STH at the previous 'biggest team in the South' tells me they have sold 14k ST, all the corporate packages (they are creating more), before even offering STs on general sale! Think he said ST are around £500.

Sounds like their ground is about the 'right size for them'

It probably wouldn't be proper grass - more like the Madejski Dome grass....plus from the plans it looks like it will still be seating and not just a flat slope.

Pretty sure they won't let people walk straight up to the top of the stands, but will install barriers of some description.

Although it's possible you spotted a flaw that they haven't considered.
