Ian Royal I can't say I'm hugely impressed from youtube clip posted. Can pick a pass and reasonably tidy feet, tall, ok strength and pace, but the standard of play around him was pretty low. I think he'd need at least a season in the Championship to see how he does and whether he can even cut it at that level personally. But he's got potential.

All bases covered Ian. Back to your old self. Liking it!

I'm sorry, I forgot you hate people to take a reasoned approach and it's only acceptable to come to an instant conclusion about a player's worth based on very little.

If you want it spelling out a bit clearer, I think he looks a fairly complete player, in that he has no glaring weaknesses, but not good enough for the PL at the moment, and probably never.

I think the fact that Heskey went from one of the worst players in the premiership to one of the best in the Hyundai A-League, shows just how poor the standard is.

This fella looks like one for the future. By all means get him in now; he is under 21 so wouldn't be part of the 25. Hopefully he can settle in now and be ready to make an impact next season (whichever division we are in).
This signing should not be instead of the experienced players that we need now, but as well as.

Looks suspiciously like Andrew Surman to me.

Heskey is not even close to one of the best players in the a-league...

tied for 3rd in goals scored with 7 in 13 games. It appears the A League is where aging English strikers go to die... As the leading scorer is Daniel McBeen with 11 goals in 11 games.

heskey's team play nice and simple to him, nice high balls in to the box, nothing too complex, mainly a tap in merchant. Daniel McBreen, plays ahead of rogic and feeds off most of his play :)

Sorry my knowledge on the A-League isn't the best  I just assumed he was doing quite well being tied 3rd top scorer and all

Cripple Creek I watch a fair bit of the A league over here and, generally, it is really bad. Defensive play in the A league is particularly awful but that said there is no reason why this player would not be a good long-term prospect. However, plunging him straight into the Premiership - which I doubt Reading are planning anyway- would be unfair on him.

I agree. The A-League is unbelievably rubbish. So much for proven Premiership experience

Hi guys, I have been somewhat of a long term lurker on this forum (mostly to check on how Fedders has been going). I felt the need to join and contribute to this thread as I feel I am well placed to comment on Tom Rogic. Just as a little background, I have been following English Football for 25 years and currently work for a very well known football publication in Australia.

A few things I'd like to clear up, firstly regarding the A-League and where it sits in terms of quality in comparison the English Leagues. Generally the level of football is considered to be that of League One with the top 3 clubs (one of which Tom plays for) at mid to low championship level. The first 5 or so seasons I would have had it at League 2 (maybe even lower) but the quality has improved incredibly over the past 2 and a half seasons. I'm sorry to inform you, (and with all due respect to the great man) Emile Heskey would not rate in the top 25 players in the A-League.

Tom Rogic would be in the top 5 players in the A-League. He was only signed to his first pro contract a little over 12 months a go and has been quite simply a revelation. Some of you well connected to your club will know that Reading attempted to sign Tom shortly after he beat tens of thousands of young players to win 'The Chance' competition and was invited to the nike Football Academy, declaring him as one of the best eight unsigned young footballers in the world. You may have seen glimpses of his incredible close control which has been widely attributed to his futsal background. Last season Rogic went from strength to strength. He started as a youngster making cameos off the bench and finished as one of the Mariners key players in the premiership team. This season he has been their best player. He recently made his international debut against South Korea coming off the bench and changing the game (which Australia went on to win). This appearance meant that he would be the first player to represent Australia in both the indoor and outdoor versions of the game.

In terms of playing style Rogic is big and strong but highly skilful with the ball at his feet. He is a good long range shot and has banged in some sensational goals. He will need to continue to develop his game and his fitness to be up to PL level but if you manage to sign him it will be an excellent long term acquisition. I would rate him as good as, if not better than the two best young Australian players to come out of the A-League so far in Tommy Oar and Robbie Kruse. Tommy has been Utrecht's best player this season and was at one point leading the Erevesdie player of the year count. Robbie Kruse has been tearing up the Bundesliga.

Rogic will probably cost less the 500K as his deal expires in the northern summer. I know if i were a Reading fan I would be quite happy with this bit of business.

Good luck with the relegation fight!

Cheers mate, always good to get some proper info once in a while!
You don't need to be sorry for how crap heskey is, we already know!
Aussies have always taken sport very seriously, which is why you tend to be very good at your chosen disciplines, of which football (not soccer!) is now one.
I totally believe that your league is constantly improving, but it'll probably plateau soon as you're not in europe (no champions league etc), which means your best players Rogic for example, will head into the northern hemisphere.
PS, Fedders is doing just fine, but the folks on here tend to be 'cup's half empty' kind of people, so don't read too much into any negative sh1t you see on here.

Pleasure mate. I hope he does sign for you guys, I think Reading will be a great club for him to develop his football. You are spot on about the A-League only being able to develop so far. I would hope that we could reach a technical level and structure of say the J-League in Japan and set ourselves up for another 'golden generation' of Kewells, Vidukas and Cahill's. Our best will always go to Europe but now being in the Asian Confederation there are more pathways available for our players who aren't quite up to the standard. I think all football forums are a hotbed of negatively and ill informed arm chair criticism. As part of my job I visit most Premier League fan forums each week, at present I am finding the Villa fans quite entertaining!

Probably a bit much to expect him to step up and save our season; one for the future. Sounds like a very good bit of business; just because we need some PL experience, doesn't mean we should switch off our usual scouting network and overlook young talent.

Never seen him play, never even heard of him before this thread, but encouraged by what gezza said. If gezza's synopsis is half accurate would certainly be worth taking a chance on the lad, esepcially with such a small fee being banded around. May not be the player to save us this season, but could be important to us next year as we battle for promotion from the Chump.
