soggy biscuit Craig Bellamy says he has been told he is definitely one of the 3 over age players in the squad

Good decision, gets the Welsh quota up

Any idea when the squad is announced, must be soon - surely?

It's good to see that France aren't involved in this. 8)

I think the Welsh will actually make up quite a considerable part of the side/squad.

Bale and Ramsey must be shoe-ins, plus possibly Taylor and Allen. Defenders like Williams and Collins might stand a chance too considering the players ruled out through injuries and Euros involvement.

If we have Bale then I don't see the need for Giggs

Talk of Frank now being called up

Down to the last 35 of this and a few of the names in the frame have been leaked and, sensibly, it now seems that Wilshire will not be in the squad. Other names I've seen mentioned as in are:

Our own Alex McCarthy
Jack Butland and Luke Steele
Jordan Rhodes
David Beckham
Ryan Giggs
Craig Bellamy

I fear that Beckham will make the final cut on 6th July, otherwise I don't think he'd have been on the 35 as they'd get accused of using him to sell tickets under false pretences.

Would people really still buy a ticket because David Beckham might be playing?

I think so, yes. People who wouldn't normally come to football but would be attracted by him as a name.

There may be some Dads who might see it as a last chance for a young son to see Beckham in the flesh but surely your egular football fan has half a brain?

Absolutley they would yeah. Maybe not die hard football fans, but those with a passing interest looking for an Olympic event to go along to will be drawn in by the idea of seeing a Giggs or especially a Beckham playing instead of some young Premier League fringe player (that might be a bit harsh on the likes of Ramsey!).

The appeal of David Beckham isn't to regular football fans - having him means they sell tickets to people who'd ordinarily never go to a game. And that's what they need to do to fill the stadiums.

why not select Daley Thompson for the Decathlon then? or is the football side not a serious venture, just an attempt to boost sales and interest in it?

he can light the flame in the stadium, or present the track-side interviews in that case.

There's room in the squad to take along a player for the lolz. Like Downing in the Euros.

There probably isn't though. It's only an 18 man squad so much less room to play with.

Sky reporting it as well now. Giggs, Bellamy and Richards are the three over agers apparently.
