It was a privilege to have watched this man so many times. Not only among the best players in the League, but also the most likeable.

Played a few hours after finding out about the death of his beloved Nan and put in a superb performance capped with a goal.

The quote below on a baggies forum could have been written on ours a couple of years ago...

'As i posted last week Long is our most improved player and turning into one of our key star's, his all round game is coming on very well.I think this is a good example of giving a player time to adapt to playing in the Premier League, you just can't write a player off after 4/5 months'

Ideal He should be playing for AC Milan

No

He's definitely good enough for the Premiership.

Interesting watching from afar we had no idea that some of their fans had been writing him off.
Also he is down the order for the Ireland striking role.
A very hard-working player who has made the very best of his limited ability.
If only players like Robson-Kanu and Church (who both look to have more natural ability than Long) would learn that not only Long but top players like Suarez and Rooney run their socks off every week and always come off the pitch having given their all.

Wasn't he that superstar who scored TWICE (YES two goals in ONE game) against Reading University first team? Glorious win that was.

Arnie_Pie Harry on MOTD lapping up Long.

He is pure class. One of the best players we have ever had. How did he come from being so crap a few years ago to being so classy?

Because Brendan Rodgers did oxf*rd all with him and McDermott made him the player he is today.

I reckon Long barely played under Rodgers, he was injured a lot, then came back(looking overweight and unfit) and then up at Derby he came on as a sub and got a striaght red and a 3 game ban. Rodgers was sacked soon after. IIRC the abuse he got was after McDermott took over and got the benefit of being able to pick Long every week, and he was struggling to score consistently. Even in the play off year he was the traget of a sh*t load of abuse up until he started scoring goals for fun around the turn of the year that season

Did Rodgers not put Long under some unique fitness program? I seem to recall him trying something new with Halabi and I believed it involved boxing?

Long spent the summer doing boxing in a gym as I recall it to try and bulk up to be stronger on the ball. But he came back about a stone and a half too bulky and had lost half a yard of pace and had gained the turning circle of the QE2. I think it also made him more injury prone - that combined with trying to slim down again and he didn't really get match fit until about 2/3rds of the way through the season.

Half a year to lose 1 1/2 stone and get some sharpness when you are 23 & a professional sportsman?

The weightless would be harder to do while maintaining some level of match fitness especially if it's muscle and not just bulk. Throw in the odd injury and it's really not out of the ordinary.
