Ignoring the usual vitriol from the usual suspects, 26 years at one club and so many trophies marks him as the most successful manager in British football. How long before someone beats that record?

Hmm, I'm going to say at least 26 years.

Di Matteo 42 games in charge at Chelsea, 1 European Cup, 1 FA Cup. Not many could beat that.

If it is purely games to trophies then I am sure there is someone out there that took over a club temporarily and the first few games was a cup final/play off final or summat, then they left. but in terms of games to impressive trophies then Kesmondo's suggestion is probably up there

Are you autistic? It would explain much as you take everything literally. If 2 major trophies in a 42 game spell is not brilliant, what is?

United rule out Jose taking over. That's a shame, that would really piss of Chelsea. I don't agree Moyes deserves it. Unproven in Europe.

I wonder, if Moyes gets the job, how much their transfer dealings would be affected. For started, Moyes has never really done that well when spending money. Looking at his top 5 most expensive purchases (Fellaini, Yakubu, Johnson, Bilyaletdinov and Van Der Meyde) then only Fellaini has been a real success.

The other problem, of course, is if United go in a bidding war for someone. Obviously United sells itself, but would you rather go to United with David Moyes, or Munich with Guardiola? Playing under Fergie is a big thing for some players, playing under Moyes much less so.

I'm surprised the Phelan hasn't been mentioned as a successor.

Source?

Think it will be Moyes, but certainly high risk if it is. No experience in Europe and has never won a major trophy. I like Moyes and would be wrong to write him off, but even Ian Branfoot had a greater trophy haul than Moyes.

Manchester United hope to appoint the Everton manager David Moyes as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor by the end of the week, The Independent has learned.

The 50-year-old is out of contract in the summer and he is the first choice to take over from Ferguson, whose retirement after 27 years was announced this morning. Today had long been planned by the club as the day upon which Ferguson would announce he was stepping down although news of the announcement emerged on Tuesday night.

Senior sources at the club say there is no prospect of the club appointing Jose Mourinho, the Real Madrid manager, whom they are now convinced is already heading back to Chelsea with a deal in place. Ferguson will not hold his Friday press conference at the Carrington training centre ahead of Sunday’s game against Swansea at Old Trafford, his last home game.

The succession plan at the club is that there will not be major changes to the playing staff. There will also be no compensation payable to Everton for Moyes who has delayed signing a new deal in order, he has said in the past, to explore his options. An announcement on his future could be made as early as tomorrow.
