Extract from new Secret Footballer book on Guardian web site makes for a good read:

http://www.theguardian.com/football/201 ... io-capello

TSF talks about making a big mistake around the time Capello was appointed England coach. A quick bit of googling shows that Kitson's drink drive arrest was in Jan 2008 following Capello's appointment in Dec 2007. Having read the first book I was already convinced TSF is Dave and this article would seem to confirm that. Can't believe even Kitson genuinely thought he was on the brink of the England squad, though I suppose if Shore was picked anything was possible.

Was in the newspapers at the time, I remember being quite excited about it!

Surely everyone has known for quite some time now that it is Kitson writing that stuff? Awkward times for him at the RFC 05/06 reunion night!

The reason it was uncomfortable for both of us is that a few years earlier, when Capello had taken the England job, he had held a press conference in which he'd made it clear that it was time for the England squad to grow up. Misbehaviour would no longer be tolerated. A day later I received a call from a journalist friend who said he had it from two good sources at the FA that I was in Capello's England squad.

Not for the first time, I celebrated too early and far, far too well. This time, it proved to be a monumental, career-defining mistake. The next morning my name was everywhere – newspapers, TV, the internet – except on the list of Capello's England squad. Until this point my career had been going up and up and up, and it isn't an exaggeration to say that at that exact moment my love for football, my desire to play and, ultimately, my career fell off a cliff.

That's actually pretty funny, in a tragic way. I can probably find the article from one of the journalists (Guardian, I think) saying he might be picked.

And yeah, Kitson. It really is Kitson, isn't it?

I seem to remember Paul Doyle in The Guardian pushing for Kitson for England.

Mentioned in this Kevin McCarra article from Jan 2008.

Capello has his own view of how an attack ought to be structured and Dean Ashton could have been perceived as the ideal focal point had he not seemed to struggle for condition and form ever since breaking an ankle while training with England in August 2006. Attention has instead been paid to the uncapped Reading striker Dave Kitson for that role.
