Non League Newport look set to break 106 points.....but our Football League record will still stand of course.

Can't help but notice as far as Conference north & south go it is looking very good for Newport & Southport. At least we will finally get to see who is the best port next season.

Only 42 games in Conference South - so they've got 11 games remaining to get 31 points. 10 wins and a draw will be a fantastic effort if they manage it.

Yup (and I confess that I still track this on a more or less daily basis )

Leeds' win over Utd in the Cup indeed may be looked back upon as the spark that eventually burned down their league campaign, or at least charred the hell out of it --W2 D5 L3 over their last 10 in the division since that day at Old Trafford, which is something very much like relegation form (and they got kayo'd over two legs on pens in the semis of the JPT Cup)

Just imagine where they'd be now had they not nicked all of those latelatelate wins during the first half of the season

And indeed, I well recollect Norwich getting clobbered at home in their curtain-raiser as it happened (and by Colchester no less IIRC)

Colchester have turned out pretty good under Boothroyd. If they had won yesterday the gap to Leeds would have been down to 2 points. I'll be rooting for them the rest of the way.

With their home draw to Brentford today, that'll be Leeds done (104 is now their max haul with a dozen games left for them, and I mention it given that they above all were causing palpitations "early doors" and indeed on thru the festive season)

They've gone W2 D6 L3 for league matches played in the new year --12 points won from 33 on offer over nearly one quarter of a season, which projects to no better than 51 over a full campaign and would suffice to get a side relegated at the end of some seasons

Rochdale drew at home to Lincoln City today and can't finish on better than 105 points

Max possible hauls of 108 hold for Newcastle and Norwich with 12 and 11 games remaining, respectively

Don't forget their Football League Cup final appearance in 1962 when they lost 4-0 on aggregate, back in the days when the final was a two-legged affair.

Not on the evidence of Saturday. No Snodgrass and Beckford was poor / well marked. They are not as good as Charlton from what I saw

based on seeing them twice now ,Leeds will struggle to get out of the 3rd division this season, and that nice Mr Bates has priced season tickets at over £500 for next season - but you do get into a paint pot cup game for free if they aren't promoted.

After their draw today Newcastle can only equal us, so any dropped points mean they are out of the frame. Bogging Norwich though. Down 1-0 to Huddersfield, who are very good at home, and still came away with a 3-1 win. If they can win at Huddersfield like this, who is going to stop them? Still able to get 108 points. Lose soon Norwich.

Ten games left for the Canaries, which may not sound like much --but then you pause to consider that here we are doing backflips over our own guys having won seven of their last whopping...eight

Meanwhile Leeds, source of most of the early consternation, lost again today after winning in midweek, so that's them 3W 6D 4L over 13 league matches in the new year

With ten games remaining, their max possible haul for the season is now down to 101

In re: League One, chase for automatic (and I suppose that we've veered from the "Record Watch" realm into that of the "What away days are you looking forward to/dreading new for next season?" --but I don't know what forum that'd belong in)

In current table order, descending from third position: Charlton, Millwall, Colchester, Swindon, Huddersfield and Maccy Dons have closed on Leeds by, respectively, 8, 14, 3, 10, 5 and 5 points in the calendar year and still have time left to pip 'em to the wire (and of course this presumes that Norwich stay up there)

Still gotta like Leeds' position, and they built plenty of cushion for themselves

Newcastle just fought back from two goals down at Ashton Gate to get a draw, but that brings their maximum points haul for the season down to 104 with 9 left for them to play

Earlier in League One, Swindon levelled late at home to Norwich, and it finished 1-all there --so the best the Canaries could do is equal the record of 106, and they too've got 9 games remaining to be played

Especially seeing as we dropped 10 points over those last 9 games. To equal our record Norwich need to go on a run that had we managed it in those equivalent games would have seen us finish on 116!!!

I worry at the start of every year that a 'big' team will get relegated and then run rampant eclipsing our 106, i.e. Newcastle in Championship, or Norwich in League 1, but the fact that even these 'big' teams who are in theory playing in a league which should be a walkover for them, just goes to show how truly awesome we were that season.
