Chelsea hold raffle v Swansea to add five-figure sum to Wales miners fund

Despite their reputation as a hard-nosed, non-compromising club, Chelsea have shown their softer side by raising a five-figure sum via a raffle and collection for the families of the four miners killed in a tragic accident in Wales this month.

Before the game, fans of both sides were encouraged to donate money to the growing fund to help support the families of Philip Hill, 45, Charles Breslin, 62, David Powell, 50, and Garry Jenkins, 39. The four men died when the Gleision Colliery in the Swansea Valley was flooded. As well as bucket collection at the turnstiles, Chelsea and Swansea fans in huge numbers also entered a raffle conducted by the west London club, which carried a range of prizes.

Although the total is yet to calculated, a club source suggested it is expected to run into tens of thousands of pounds.
The fund has already reached £200,000 through donations from the local community back in Wales, and other contributions big and small from across the UK.

Neath MP Peter Hain, who was present at the scene throughout the dramatic and ultimately tragic rescue attempt last week, described the response to the appeal as 'just incredible'.He also issued a special thanks to Chelsea FC for their efforts.

cmonurz Smalling's goal was a marginal call, but was offside. Nani's goal wasn't. Spacey can you explain where the offside was for Rooney's goal?

Nani was offside when the ball was played to him - he ran back to collect the ball.

I never praise Chelsea in any capacity whatsoever as a rule, it's goes completely against anything in my footballing constitution, but fair play to them on this one. Good work.

Get over yourself. They've done something which is more than you have. I have no idea what / if the players have donated and nor do you.

Some of them do put their money where their mouth is. Even Bellers who has the biggest gob of them all.

Ideal I always find it leaves a strange feeling behind when obscenely rich people talk about charity/saving the earth, and want common people to donate, yet can't donate themselves.

In this case, most Chelsea players are on WEEKLY wages which are on a par with the total raised by the raffle.
Simply put, they could have raised 10-20 times as much if these obscenely rich wakners had donated one weeks wages each.
However they won't. Did they even donate £1 each? I doubt it.

I'm not rich. Yet I did contribute some loose change to the starving children in Somalia. I strongly doubt Frank Lampard did.

And yeah, I've had this thought ever since the early 90s when Michael Jackson, Madonna and Bono were moaning about the rainforest this and that, donate to starving this and that, yet they don't seem to contribute their own wealth. If they used their own money they could just buy the f'ing rainforest and save it forever!! They could build schools and educate all of f'ing Africa!! They could feed all of Africa for a couple of decades if they wanted to!! BUT THEY WON'T PUT THEIR MONEY WHERE THEIR MOUTH IS, BECAUSE THEY ARE JUST A BUNCH OF LIARS AND HYPOCRITES.

bellamy's foundation is spot on, really good idea. Read an interview with him a year or 2 ago about his career and he refused to talk about the charity stuff, just said something like 'people think I am a d***head, why try and change their minds'

^greed. Believe he's put GBP1m into it. Just another one of those players that everyone hates unless he plays for them (or gets in the way of his golf swing, or is near him at 3am in Cardiff  ).

Bobby Robson claimed that he was close to signing Wayne Rooney until Bellamy turned around and said he'd walk if Rooney game in. If he kept his mouth shut and just focused on his football then he would have achieved a lot more. Mouthy Welsh waster, with a good heart, apparently.

Wouldn't call him a waster but he should've established himself at one of the top clubs and maybe the reason why he didn't is the mouth.

&Rooney going to Newcastle

That says more about Robson's lack of faith in his own opinion than Bellamy, tbh.

Serious thoughts please, Kes.

An article in my local free rag this week saying that they will count no shows to vote, including those people who've died, as a yes vote.

"More corrupt than an African election" one fan was quoted as saying.

Sounds to me like that fan is upset because he isn't profiting from the club.
