Ideally Swansea, Cardiff and Wrexham would play in the Welsh League but it's not reasonable to chuck them out of the Football league.

IIRC, when they were setting up the new Welsh league (in the early 90's I think?), they asked the big Welsh teams if they would defect to the new league. Rather predictably, the big Welsh teams turned it down because they would lose money if they played in that league. No surprise at all.

Very sensible on their part.

I suspect the fact that the standard of football would be somewhere between parks and school playground also came into it.

Well, I seem to remember the main reason why the Welsh set up their new league was to have better development of emerging Welsh talent and they were hoping that the big Welsh teams would play a part in that. Typical self interest.

I would think the Big 3 do more for Welsh talent by playing a decent standard of football. Can't see games against Cwmbran, Haverfordwest and Connahs Quay producing the next Ryan Giggs !!

Well, I think it's what they were thinking!!!

BTW - remember this was at the time that English clubs were being gradually let back into European football and Premiership football was just starting. And Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham were in the bottom two divisions at the time too.

They might also have thought that the attraction of playing in the European Cup on winning the Welsh League might tempt them.
