Won't happen - after the Tevez debacle , the Football authorities will not want to get into long drawn out dispute with clubs that lose points - with litigation and counter litigation....

Its sad that we have to depend on this possibility to save our season, whereas a good kick up the arse of some players in the squad, would mean that this scenario would be an irrelevance

Why would theystart in Div 2 ? Surely they would need to go to the bottom of the pyramid rather than mid way ?

I can't see a club being allowed to fold at this stage of the season. Isn;t the example of Gretna a more realistic one where the players wages are paid by the league, the administrators run the club and all is done on the basis of a winding down at the end of the season.

This would give teams to still play Saints an advantage of course, of these only Burnley and Wolves figure at the top end.

I don't see how killing a club serves to benefit fans or the good of the game and it would be morally wrong (and probably legally wrong ?) to 'make an example' of anyone. Treat them according to the rules no more and no less.

Alan Partridge To actually wish a club to go out of business in order to win a false promotion is all a bit bizarre in my opinion.

What he said.

Utterly bizarre for anyone to wish the demise of a football club, and all the history that goes with it, just for a few points in a promotion race. Just goes to show how parochial, blinkered and short-sighted a large number of football fans are.

It wouldn't be a false promotion, and anyway we are owed two of them having twice been foiled in attempts to hit the big time by dodgy rule application!

But it wouldn't be the best way to do it. I'd rather stay in the Championship than see a good club like Southampton bite the dust.

Players wagers will be paid by the PFA not the FA.

It is exactly BECAUSE the FA and Premier League bottled it with West Ham that all the compensation business has arisen. If they had had the balls to do the right thing and deduct points from the Hammers all this mess would have been avoided. They won't (wouldn't, depending on how true this is) want to back down so cravenly again.

I seem to recall that judges sometimes pass sentences (within those made available to them) to make an example of offenders. Therefore, provided the punishment is one permitted within league rules, there is nothing to stop Saints receiving a harsh punishment in order to deter others from doing the same.
