now maybe the rules have changed. however people in the comments are saying this has never been a rule, but I always though the ball has to be played forward to be offside. What the law today? and has it never been a thing that the ball has to be played forward for it to be offside

Doesn't matter which direction it's played as long as the other conditions are met (2 oppo players etc)
To me, it looks like it's the return ball where the player is offside
