- popped along to the Racecourse Ground to see why the 'Yellamen' are currently head of the pack in this division - but not really any the wiser.
- they are strong, quick and well-organized centre and back but didn't have much going forward, on this showing: possibly some absentees - there often are for midweek games.
- main weapon was a huge throw-in which they used incessantly for the last 1/4 of the game as they pinned their visitors back deep in their own half.
VW could have nicked something on the break and both sides hit woodwork - but eventually the power told and Ascot got an important and well-fought for 3 points, with a close range header on about 94' - following a long-throw.
- Wantage kept on their tails with an impressive 6-0 hammering of then 4th placed Holmer Green.

Bishops Cleeve v Windsor
Brackley Town Saints v Royal Wootton Bassett Town
Holmer Green v Tuffley Rovers
Lydney Town v Reading City - as above absentees most probably did for 'City' - I heard they were missing all of their regular back-line for the game on Monday which they lost 1-4 to Ardley.
HELL1E
AFC Aldermaston v Chalvey Sports
Thame Rangers
v Milton United
Wallingford Town
v Holyport
Wokingham & Emmbrook v Didcot Town Development @ Larges La
Woodley United v Penn & Tylers Green @ Scours La

Brockenhurst v Andover New Street
Tadley Calleva
v Team Solent
WESS1
Petersfield Town v Downton
Romsey Town v Alton
Totton & Eling v Andover Town
Whitchurch United
v Ringwood Town

I'm not expecting a lot today from Winchester City's trip to Merthyr - they have started the season well - a lot better than Frome from their league who we beat in the last round. Plus we have a stack of injuries. Apparently the pitch got a drenching on Thursday night, so possibly that will be a leveller. Fingers crossed eh?

Oh ..... and FA CUP Lymington v Torquay was a 12:30 KO - is live somewhere?

Merthyr 1 - 4 Winchester City.

Fantastic result, hat trick for Ty Mitford and another £9k in the bank.

finders crossed for a winnable home tie in the next round. 3rd qualifying is the furthest we've been, would be good to beat that.

4-1 win at Merthyr in end
Torquay won 7-0 at Lymington in the BBC Sport game

Hungerford v Wantage abandoned due to horrific injury to Hungerford’s keeper who is on loan from Reading. Let’s hope that whatever has happened turns out to be not too serious and that he’s back up and playing soon.

Jokull Andresson - Knee to the head at high speed apparently.

He's only played 3 games and has suffered 2 serious injuries. Poor sod. They rate him down there though!

79 Binfield 0-3 Cirencester Town
80 Slough Town 2-2 Sholing

NAT
Aldershot Town 2-0 Dover Athletic
Barrow 2-0 Maidenhead United

SLP-S
Staines 3-5 Hartley Wintney HW 2 up at HT – Staines fought back to lead 3-2 on 70’ but The Row scored three in the last 10’ to go top of the league! (by 1 pt from half a doz clubs who were engaged in Cup action yesterday)

SL1-C
Coleshill Town 2-2 Thame United
Kidlington
1-5 Dunstable Town – ‘Kiddy’ still without a point
SL1-S
Fleet Town 2-5 AFC Totton
Highworth Town 5-0 Thatcham Town - hat-trick for the returning Callum Mcghee–Parsons - one of the Worthians leading scorers in their astonishing early burst of form last season. He’s come back from Supermarine – not sure if permanent/loan or dual register – don’t think he can do the latter for a side in the same league?
It would appear the Kingfisher keeper Rackley also had a game to forget – incl being lobbed from 40yds for the 4th
- Highworth sit 4th – other new boys Blackfield & Langley top the table from Evesham and Yate.
- Winch back in 6th ; Thatcham 16th and Fleet Town 2nd bottom

IL1-SC
Ashford Town (Middx) 0-5 Bracknell Town - ‘Robins’ continue to soar away clear at the top – hat-trick for Jo Grant – now 6 wins from 6
Westfield 1-4 Cheshunt

CCLP
AFC Hayes 0-2 Redhill
Balham 5-0 Abbey Rangers
Camberley Town 3-2 Hanworth Villa
CB Hounslow United 0-2 Spelthorne Sports
Chertsey Town 2-1 Cobham – 'Curfews' now 7 from 7 and are clear at the top
Guildford City 2-2 Sutton Common Rovers
Horley Town 2-2 Southall
Knaphill
1-4 Colliers Wood United
Walton & Hersham 2-2 Raynes Park Vale
CCL1
Ash United 2-2 Sheerwater
British Airways 1-1 AC London
Chessington & Hook United 3-0 Bagshot
Cove
2-4 Bedfont & Feltham
Dorking Wanderers Reserves 3-1 Kensington Borough
Farnham Town 3-1 Fleet Spurs
FC Deportivo Galicia 0-3 Epsom & Ewell
Sandhurst Town 1-3 Godalming Town
Tooting Bec 4-1 Eversley & California

HELLP
Abingdon United 2-3 Fairford Town - 2nd bottom Ab Utd hand bottom club Fairford their first win
Ardley United 1-0 Virginia Water
Ascot United 1-3 Brimscombe & Thrupp - leaders well beaten at home – B&T up to 3rd
Bishops Cleeve 1-0 Windsor - Windsor looking to get stuck in mid-table again, with some bewilderingly inconsistent results
– though Bps Cleeve are stronger than their lowly position would suggest – they have plenty of games in hand. Doubt the young Windsor lads enjoyed the usually swampy Kayte Lane pitch?

Brackley Town Saints 1-1 Royal Wootton Bassett Town
Holmer Green 1-2 Tuffley Rovers
Lydney Town 0-3 Reading City - looks like a return to some form for ‘City’; they host Flackwell Heath tomorrow (Mon) night at Rivermoor in the Berks/Bucks Senior Cup
HELL1E
AFC Aldermaston 1-1 Chalvey Sports
Thame Rangers 3-0 Milton United - Rangers currently top from Aldermaston – though there is quite a disparity in games played in this division – especially with Bicester folding – which has ‘wiped’ their results to date.

Wallingford Town 1-0 Holyport
Wokingham & Emmbrook 2-2 Didcot Town Development
Woodley United 0-3 Penn & Tylers Green

WESSP
Alresford Town 3-3 Hamworthy United
Brockenhurst 3-0 Andover New Street - ANS still pointless
Tadley Calleva 1-1 Team Solent
WESS1
Petersfield Town 5-0 Downton
Romsey Town 4-0 Alton
Totton & Eling 3-0 Andover Town - as per their close neighbours in the division above no points for Andover yet
Whitchurch United 3-2 Ringwood Town - another win for the Jam Boys – safely tucked in mid-table

Sutekh Saw Slough beat Oxford City 2-0. Thought Slough were the better side throughout and should have had a couple before Oxford had their captain sent off for a debatable professional foul just before half time.

Impressed with their Lee Togwell, James Dobson and Matty Edwards (?, the no. 9). Thought Oxford were a good well organised if a bit limited side destined for a lower mid table finish but was impressed with their keeper’s performance (and that of their no 10, Kyan ?Wiltshire?). Think Slough might be good enough for top 10 based on yesterday.

Unconvinced by the referee, wasn’t quite sure he called the red card right and thought Slough had a better shout for a penalty in the second half then the one they got early in the first half.

Youll be talking about a certain Mathew Stevens, a cracking striker who was on Readings books now at Peterborough on loan to Slough. He is way above his level here and will fancy them to go on and have a great season, he is only on loan till January though, scored a hattrick this weekend

Very good start to the season from Slough - top half of the table, defence strengthened by the arrival of Sam Togwell and as mentioned above Matty Stevens looking like a very good acquisition, if only until January. He scored a brace for Peterborough U23s in the week after the hat-trick at Eastbourne as well, but not able to add to it Saturday against Sholing. TBH, Sholing were more than good value for the draw, despite being several divisions below Slough and 2-0 down after about 25 minutes - I thought they were fantastic, and with Slough not being at the top of their game fully deserved the replay. Magic of the Cup and all that...

Even more galling for Thatcham as Parsons was one of a number of players who'd signed for them in the summer, and played pre-season, before leaving on the eve of the season.

fingers crossed for a winnable home tie in the next round. 3rd qualifying is the furthest we've been, would be good to beat that.[/quote]

Turns out I was wrong again. Winchester City got to the 4th qualifying round in 1954.

Anyway, We've been drawn home to Cirencester. Dull but certainly winnable - same division, 3 points behind us atm. We'll be disappointed if we don't win this.

FA Trophy extra preliminary round this Saturday. Another chance to top up the coffers.

Maidenhead won 3-1 at Chesterfield last night and with Chesterfield now 20th (or equal 21st) I reckon Martin Allen hasn't got long left up there.

Kulshaw72RFC Good win for Slough in the FA Cup the other night.

...sadly in the other replays; Diddy out on pens though after 0-0 vs Hitchin

Supermarine beaten by near-ish neighbours Chipp'num and Egham lose at Brightlingsea.

Brackley progressed with a 2-0 win over Nuneaton Borough

... I nipped along the M4 for the re-staged tie at Bulpit La; visitors Wantage had by far the better of a 1-1 against Hungerford - they go again next week. Can't believe Crusaders will be as flat in the replay but Wantage are powerful and fit and could continue to give them a test that belies the three Step gap between them.

Here's a sorry tale. Went to Sidmouth Town v Liverton United on Wednesday night - South West Peninsula League Division 1 East (Step 7 in the new terminology).

Quality was utterly atrocious, plus the temperature was falling steadily, so I decided to leave at half-time with the home side 5-2 up. Final score was 12-2, which would have (just) beaten the most goals I've ever seen, so I'm annoyed for being so weak. Attendance - about 45 in the first half. Attendance excluding family and friends of players - probably 1.

Sidmouth right-back was better than Gunter - couldn't honestly say the same about the Liverton player, but it would be a close-run thing.

This w/e's NL Fixtures - incl the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Trophy

- they've added in a welter of new teams by dint of the additional STEP04s & 3s - hence the need for another round but I still find it difficult to show any enthusiasm for this competition, as it has so many same level:same division clashes and a bit like the Senior FA Cup the finalists are often from the same cadre of top level clubs.

Might try and get to one of the 'new' Southern League midland-based sides, if not the two at home in the Trophy then maybe a League fixture.

Last season a bit of an exception as STEP02 Brackley grabbed it and not long before Gosport came through from lower down the Pyramid.

- no game for Bracknell as their scheduled opponents (Egham) were drafted into the FA Trophy. Similarly Marlow without a fixture.

Odd that Bracknell avoided the Trophy draft and have a bye to the next round when you consider their cock up over entering the FA competitions. They also had switched the Egham game to last Tuesday but that had to be cancelled due to Egham's FA Cup replay at Brightlingsea.
