Off to Gloucestershire again today for Fairford v Windsor.

How the fixtures have worked for Windsor is crazy. In September we had 7 games, of which 6 were away, 5 of whom with journeys of circa 70-90 miles each way.

Then in 30 days from 27/9 to 26/10 we have just ONE game! One game!!?

And by mid September we had already played 2 teams Home and Away!

I can see that we may well be happy to have got the long journeys out of the way during fine weather but I’m not sure the fixture list has a huge amount of logic behind it. Home games are the lifeblood for non league teams and to have 1 home game in each of September and October is bound to make life difficult for Step 9 clubs.

Never does at Division 9 equivalent and below and certainly not in the Hellenic League where fixtures just seem totally random and decided almost on the spur of the moment. The run ins for teams last season were spectacularly ridiculous with Thatcham finishing all their fixtures about 2 weeks before Bracknell (& eventual 3rd place Highworth about a week before that). The number of Saturdays where some teams get no games while others are playing league games and there's no cups being played is also laughable. Still at least that gives more time to get out and have a swear at Reading

Try 2 days, not 2 weeks.

A lot of the Hellenic's fixture planning is open to criticism though, but there wasn't a lot they could do about the backlog of fixtures that Thatcham and Bracknell faced as it was caused by the weather and both sides cup runs. I know Bracknell had a few issues with a couple of games not being moved for them, but I'm not sure a lot more could've been done about those in the end.

Bit out there then, could have sworn it was longer. Anyway my point is that while there was a dreadful build up of games the last Saturday of the Hellenic league season saw just one of the top 3 sides with a scheduled game which to my mind shows a bit of disorganisation to the fixtures generally. Luckily it didn’t matter but if there’d been a point or something separating all three then it could have been a little advantageous for one of them.

Don't get me wrong, I agree it's a little too disorganised and could be improved but, to give them some benefit of doubt it was a crazy season with both Bracknell and Thatcham having a lot of extra cup games on top of the pretty exceptional number of postponed games.

Bracknell weren't very happy with a couple of decisions not to rearrange games, and basically accused the League of favouritism/nepotism, but I's argue that the controversial decisions were made in the interest of fairness for all teams involved.

As it happens there was quite an advantage on that last Saturday of the season as Bracknell knew they had to win 10-0 to win the league with Thatcham having finished their season on the Thursday night. Bracknell managed 8, IIRC, but just ran out of time to get the last couple of goals they needed.

Getting knocked out of the FA Trophy mid-week was a bummer, but today Winchester City are through to the 4th (FOURTH) qualifying round of the FA (FA) Cup.

Excellent day - the club made a real effort around publicising the game, but the weather was a shit and must have put a lot of people off, nevertheless, 250+ people came down.

Early goal, one more after 20 mins and a late pen to see us through. Great scenes afterwards.

all down to the draw now. Hopefully a winnable home game, and the FA Cup proper. (we can dream)

The extra cash (15k) is a big deal for us, but more importantly, 100+ people came who don't normally. Hopefully they will come back. 8)

Great stuff! Is that the furthest you have been?

Getting far in the early rounds can secure a clubs future for a couple years.

Apparently the club made it this far in 1954, so it equals the best ever run. Today was a home game against a side in the same division as us, so always one we hoped to win. Last round we beat Merthyr 4-1 away, which was something else. Who knows what the draw might bring.

...had a quick delve and they also made it that far twice in the very early thirties - but for me to go in any deeper into the NL archives would be further than my own slightly middleweight Anorak could protect me!
I'm sure I found an on-line site somewhere with all of the FA Cup Qualifiers listed for every year :? but it's on the fringes of the the Hoppers equivalent of the 'dark-web' and I may not be able to return! 8)
Think the next couple of rounds are still regionalized - though from vague recollection - they recently may have done away with the N/S zonal divide, a bit earlier in the senior competition, than before .... so Winch may yet get some reet Northern lads.... or better still the Sh!ts!

Binfield 0-1 Bishops Cleeve - worrying form for Moles, who are now level on points with VW who occupy the last relegation spot.
– they do have plenty of games in hand though
- Need a few more of those Monday night fixtures to boost them back up the table. Next one I’m aware of is on Bonfire Night when Wantage are due to be the visitors.

Flackwell Heath 1-3 Brackley Town Saints Saints hanging on in 3rd with some impressive recent results.
Holmer Green 3-2 Shrivenham
Lydney Town 3-0 Abingdon United - Ab U have sunk to the foot of the table
Reading City 1-3 Brimscombe & Thrupp – City stumble again – B&T up to 4th
Tuffley Rovers 6-1 Virginia Water - Rovers get an impressive haul and hop above VW on GD, near the bottom
Wantage Town 3-2 Royal Wootton Bassett Town – from memory Freds often struggle of late against RWBT, so this represents quite a decent result for them – stay in 2nd behind Ascot.
Windsor 0-2 Ascot United - att of 115 saw the leaders stay out in front. A report I read elsewhere from a hopper (I think?) yesterday, more or less backs up what I thought of the Yellamen – neat tidy and functional without too much fuss or flare. Sit four points clear but the ‘Freds’ have 4 games in hand.

Ascot did not look like league winners to me.

Better than Windsor though, but not by a lot.

Draw made for 4th qualifying round of FA Cup today. Quite a few local sides still left. Maidenhead have a tough away game probably at Chippenham. Winchester have a plum away trip to Torquay although they may have fancied a home tie

I'd have much preferred a home game. There were a lot of new people at the game on Saturday - a home draw against Torquay and we might have got a four figure crowd, many of whom might have stuck around. It would have got the city interested in the club and been a big boost.

That said, and based solely on Twitter comments, Winch fans seem to be really pleased with the draw. I know a lot of the most committed fans have volunteer jobs on matchdays, so an away game is a chance for a day out and big game they can actually watch.

It'll be the best ground, and the biggest crowd most of our team have played at so the players are excited about the draw too.

I have tickets for a Tom Robinson gig in Southampton that Saturday, so I'm not going to be going. So tempted to bin the gig though.

No idea which league they're in but Wingate & Finchley might have just become my non-league team, having appointed a new management team of Nicky Shorey and Glen Little
