earleyroyal The fault for a player missing a penalty lies with the media? I thought our top professionals were paid to put distractions like that out of their mind?

All you ever hear from the Media is 'saved'. Our whole country's attitude to pens is wrong.

Even tonight, John Barnes was saying what a great save by Gomes for Jenas's pen....... no John, it was a sh*t pen. Unless you watch the keeper and dink it the other way (like a couple tonight), you should have the bottle to place your pen in an unsaveable place. Our players never do, we just kick it at the goal and hope the keeper goes the wrong way.

If a pen is saved, it is not a good save by the keeper it is a sh*t pen.

This was shown when we went out to Portugal a few years back. Some English uni had doen research on pens and had worked out the areas of a goal where, if you place your pen, it is unsaveable. They tried to give that data to the FA and were rebuffed. After we went out on Pens, one of the papers had superimposed ours and Portogals pens onto the graphic. iirc NONE of our pens were in the unsaveable zone, wereas all but one of portugal's were in it.

To place a pen in an unsaveable spot you have to run the risk of missing the goal and every players knows they will get savaged for missing the goal. You hear from commentators time and time again when it happens that "you have to get it on target and make the keeper make a save", "its criminal to miss the goal", "if you hit the target you've always got a chance" etc.......
Our players are all too aware of this and so our crap pens continue.

I don't for a second think our players dont have the quality to put the ball in the corner (esp high), but they do lack the bottle to try

Daniella I was ridiculed after we lost to Portugal for suggesting the English national team and club sides couldn't take penalties as they lack technique.

What do those people say now? Another night which just backs up the point.

Anyone who suggests that England could improve their penalty taking practise and technique gets ridiculed ...

Jagielka's pen was well-saved tonight. The keeper went the right way, but went to the floor. Jags' pen was pretty high and the keeper said Go Go Gadget Arms and kept it out.

SAVED!

Not by me

Its something i'm very vocal about. The fault lies totally with out fans and media who will crucify someone for missing the goal.

I would rather our players had the bottle to place a pen, rather than just hit it on target and hope the keeper goes the other way. Its just a lack of bottle
the problem is they can't place one as they don't practice the technique to place one properly. The ones that do miss with a placed kick invariably do so because they've either hit it far too near the keeper, or placed it about two foot up - which is the perfect height for a diving keeper to save.

It just amazes me that people think penalties are just about "bottle" when they are a set-piece like any other. Imagine if a coach had gone up to a young David Beckham and told him there's no point practicing his 20 yard free-kicks as you can't ever replicate the tension of a match situation.

I agree, getting away from this attitude our country has towards penalties is a must. The players need the practice to put the ball in the corner time and time again, so they might actually have the bottle to try and place one there. And the fans/press need to get off people's backs if they try and place it in the corner but hit the post/miss the goal.

As a fan i'm far happier with Yakubu's miss (hit post) than Jenas's ('saved'), but the reverse is true for most people

As this country stands its "just get it on target" and "oh well the keeper saved it" and "we never get the luck in shoot-outs". Grrrrrrrr

So AJ went off with a minute to go for Gravesen, presumably in anticipation of the shootout, leading to 2 questions

1. How is a man who scored 11 pens in a season once happy to go off and dodge having to take one?
2. How did Gravesen's penalty work out for them?

Silver Fox 1. How is a man who scored 11 pens in a season once happy to go off and dodge having to take one?

He also missed two in the same game earlier in the season (UEFA Cup group game vs Metallist IIRC) so perhaps he's asked not to take pens now.

Silver Fox 2. How did Gravesen's penalty work out for them?

Well, Gravesen scored his pen (first one of the shoot out) so he did what was required which is more than can be said for Yakubu and Jagielka.

John Madejski's Wallet Both English teams come back from 1st leg deficits but lose on pens.

Typical

Didnt watch the spurs game, but feel really bad for Everton, they didnt stop attacking for 120min. Fiorentnia offered nothing and were cynical as hell

Tbf though, Everton were very lucky not to be more than 2-0 down after the first leg when Fiorentina battered them for 90 minutes, so I guess that penalties was the best way to separate the sides.

Lampard completes his hat-trick - and then gets his fourth goal on a great night for the midfielder and his team
