paultheroyal Horndean are flying - must be the infamous sloping pitch which gives Fleet Town a run for its money.

Cant wait for Bracknell vs Basingstoke Town on Saturday, bumper crowd and a great atmosphere.

What are you predicting, Paul? Bracknell were awful on Saturday against Chesham, think Basingstoke have a decent chance.

How bad must Chesham have been then esp. bearing in mind they’re a division above Bracknell.

You can still be awful against a team from a higher level. Chesham weren't great either by all accounts, the feedback I got was it was a really ugly game.

Basingstoke are exceeding everyone's expectations. They have an excellent balance of seasoned non league pros, academy products and ex football league players, Brendan Rodgers son has just signed for them.

Tempers will flare, going for 3:1 - Basingstoke. This will be there first real proper test as promotion candidates.

paultheroyal Horndean are flying - must be the infamous sloping pitch which gives Fleet Town a run for its money.

Vaguely remember that slope at Horndean - is quite a decent one up at North Leigh too ..

.. in my (relatively) extensive travels the slopiest (is that even a word? - bit too close to 'sloppiest' ..... :? ) - most slopey pitches, I've encountered in the main Pyramid - were at Zembard Lane - Chard.
(they eventually got heaved out of the Western league in 2019 on the grounds of .... 'Ground' 8) ) - sadly now struggling down in the Zummerzet County Leagues somewhere ...not sure this pic shows it up too well.... but there's a 12' difference between goals at either end: so the crossbar at one end is below the pitch level of the other.

...rivalling this would be Ashton & Backwell (formerly just Backwell Utd - presumably over time Ashton slid down the hill and they merged in 2010?! :lol: ) also now back in the Western league. Couldn't find a decent pic of that but remember one corner kind of veers suddenly upwards.

Finally much nearer to home and remedied long ago by some brutalistic re-landscaping: 'Spratley's Meadow' Amersham.
Essentially they scoured out a huge chunk of the hillside and piled it up on the opposite touchline side to make a plateau.
Problem is the resultant 'drop' down now from the elevated bit near the dugouts - if an away player takes too many steps back to wind up for a throw-in he'll likely disappear down in the field beyond! :lol: :lol: - doesn't look as dramatic now as it used too and the odd derelict 'structure' you might be able to make out in the distance - below the level of the pitch is some old preserved barn-thingy that they can't demolish apparently.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
...not a massive amount of NL League action tonight locally - typical for my week off too ---- seems to be another designated 'Cup' week
NAT Woking v Bromley
IL1-SC Bracknell are up at Northwood: in the same division Westfield host Bedfont Sports -just over the road from Kingfield, so might get busy in the area and Chertsey go round to Chipstead.
Staines host Brightlingsea in their delayed Trophy tie.
...couple of games in the CCL1 Eversley v Bagshot at (19:30 KO) and Sandhurst host Cove at Bottom Meadow
HELLP - Shrivenham v Westbury
...and there are another batch of B&B ties (Round 2) scheduled at Wallingford (v Buck Ath) , Milton (v Flackwell) & Abingdon Utd (v Holmer Gn)
Never been to them grounds FOC and be interesting to see if they rival Horndean or Fleet Town which always shocked me with their slope.
Higher up the leagues always remembered Oxford Utd and Yeovil having sizeable slopes before new grounds.
Wimborne Town before they moved was quite bizarre. Sloped away up to the corner flag with a dip lol.
...been to Calthorp Pk (Fleet) loads of times never really struck me as being excessively slanted - got used to it I s'pose?
- unlike their &^%$ing crooked admission prices - money grabbing *&^%ers 8)
Think I got stung for about £10 once, many moons back for an Aldersh!t Cup tie - I remember it in particular cos I'm certain it was the same month and the same price, to watched the Sw!ne at home vs Atalanta of all people.
That was in the very short-lived revival of the professional-variant of the Anglo-Italian Cup - mid-90s ran for about 4 yrs
- EFL clubs vs Serie B I think? (Also a very rare non-RFC related visit to the County Ground!)
...and just for the lulz they got whumped (thought it was more than 0-2 though) - I think they did actually win it ## in it's previous guise early 70s!
##1970 on the eve of the WC in Mexico - Game abandoned due to fighting in the crowd @ Naples - Swindon leading 3-0 v Napoli were awarded the Trophy
Taken from an STFC website - that's more than enough Sw!ne-talk - I've got the anti-bacterial spray out now to clean my keyboard! :mrgreen:
Trouble started when Arthur Horsfield scored Swindon's third goal in the 63rd minute (*Peter Noble had scored for Swindon in the 24th and 58th minutes). Disgruntled fans, angered at the home side's failure to check brilliant Swindon, hurled a fusillade of rocks and bottles on the field, prompting the police to retaliate with teargas. Groups of youngsters then started breaking up stones and wooden benches and hurling them over the wide moat and onto the pitch. A linesman was struck and the referee ordered the players towards the main stand as clearly it was impossible for play to carry on. The players had to run the gauntlet to escape to the dressing rooms and several Swindon players were struck by missiles. Horsfield, in particular, had a nasty bruise on his thigh. To their credit, Swindon never lost their composure and thoroughly deserved their victory. The defence with Harland, Thomas and Trollope outstanding, held on easily. In midfield, John Smith and Joe Butler were always in control so that Swindon paced their game splendidly.
...round-up of midweek NL stuff:
NAT Woking 0-2 Bromley
in the same section ...'Saarfend's' new 'guvna' Kevin Maher (whohe - ?? me neither? 8) - looked him up - ex-player - there for 10 yrs close to 400 games then managed the u21/23s for a spell) oversaw a quick up-turn in fortunes for the 'Shrimpers' as they walloped a very sorry Dover 4-1 - lifts them out of the bottom 3 as well.
In the NAT southern section, leaders Dartford lost again 0-1 at Concord Rangers - that's two defeats in succession by the same narrow score.
In the Isthmian 1 SC Bracknell got a comfortable 2-0 win up at Northwood to top the division - two goals very close together in the first half - another one for Dave Tarpey.
Westfield shared points with Bedfont Sp in a 1-1 draw. Chertsey also pick up 1 pt with a 2-2 draw at leafy Chipstead.
Wasn't much else on R&R has covered the B&B ties elsewhere on the dedicated thread over on TB - wins for Wallingford, Abingdon Utd & Flackwell
Staines edged past Brightlingsea in the delayed FA Trophy game - now have the unenviable task of a trip to Brentwood on the 13th :wink:
In other ties Truro got past Cirencester and Tiverton bt Supermarine on pens
There were a couple of league games down in the CCL-1 - Bedfont & F won 2-1 vs London Samurai.
Eversley & Calif. racked up 5 with only one in reply vs a rather hapless Bagshot who'd probably be well adrift at the bottom but
a) Woodley, just below them are a whopping 7 games behind &
b) they just might possibly be even worse! :lol:
Though they'd both give another very uncompetitive side in this section that I saw last night (Tue) a good run (and I'm not even counting Aldermaston who are looking pretty grim too) :
I went down to the former 'Bottom Meadow' now named the rather grand 'SB Stadium' - home of Bracknell and Sandhurst Town.
I saw the 'original' ground owners STFC obliterate a very poor Cove EIGHT - NIL and it could have been twice that very easily.
The newly re-furbed & much uplifted ground - though not entirely finished yet - is rather minimalist in aspect and almost totally BLACK in decor :?
- is certainly lacking stewards to open up the bleedin' barrier at the driveway up to the ground! :roll:
- though tbf the 'Fizzers' never quite nailed the management of that on match days either, when they were in sole command of the site.
I'm sure I was there for a game once 2 or 3 yrs back, with everyone stood around waiting for the third match official to arrive only to witness a few frenzied phone calls ... and one young lad (or ladette) was despatched full-haste back up the lane to open the barrier for the Asst Ref who was stuck outside in his car!
Nice bar if still a bit cramped - I think they've just gutted and re-furbished the old STFC clubhouse - nice view of the pitch from in there too.
I might have ventured further afield but when I checked the possible fixtures, virtually every M'way en route (N, E & W) was &^%$ed. :|
-I had to negotiate a fairly imaginative narrow-laned SatNav-less diversion anyway down to Sandhurst (my phone version was playing up)
- 'The Ridges' / Wellingtonia Ave - beyond 'Finch' down to the A321 @ Crowthorne has been shut for yonks now??
...and even then: on arrival back in RG1, I had a lovely unexpected tour round the ever more bewildering one-way system in the area.
A load of roads had also been closed with some bizarre diversions in operation - the Silver St one had caused a particularly neat gridlock - felt sorry for the Kings Chef staff. When I eventually got back near enough to park for it, they were taking calls from all and sundry cos their delivery drivers couldn't work out how to get anywhere. :P Apparently whoever was doing the roadworks had reportedly shut the road about 4 hours early!
(I can't possibly apportion any blame outright to my neighbouring work colleagues in RBC)
- mate went AWOL for last Sat evening's 'delight' at the SCL -hopefully he just thought better of it -but he's been a tad poorly of late too - so I really should call, to check up on him :(
- might also be swayed by which of the M'ways are actually open. Looks as if the M25/26 round in Kent had some 'difficulties' this week nr Sevenoaks AND Dartford - if that continues it would take out a 3rd of the possibles. Plus if M4/M40 follow their usual w/e patterns - that would wipe out the easterly options too.
What a ground that is!! One of the nicest non league step level grounds I have ever seen. Very impressed. What’s the deal there? Have Bracknell paid for that? Are they staying there.
I loved yesterday and will now follow Basingstoke away more. When we equalised i literally celebrated like a reading goal, gutted at the end for the late winner.
Some of our fans were bellends and giving the keeper stick.
I defend refs, but Christ he was an oddball hearing him speak to players. No complaints with red card.
Basingstoke need to bounce back and win these games in hand and they are right back in the mix.
With availability in the Bracknell area completely out of the question, Bottom Meadow will be the permanent home for the foreseeable future. I agree it is a really nice ground, the club have done a great job of improving it and upgrading the facilities.
Really good for Sandhurst Town too, secures their future and they now have a conveyor belt of players coming into their squads from the Bracknell youth set up.
Sounds good. Two local clubs working together - for the record who owns Bottom Meadow now, is it Sandhurst or Bracknell or the local authority or someone else?
...we headed out west on a blissfully well-behaved M4 and ticked off the the new boys in WESTERN DIV ONE
-they'd just had their lights installed too - their first game under them was this midweek in front of a bumper crowd in excess of 300.
Only about half that today - ground is buried away in some twisty up/down suburban roads at the end of the delightfully named Cock Lane that leads up to Mount Hill :? and down into the Hanham suburb of E.Brizzle inside A4174 ring.
AEK Boco 1-3 Cheddar - fairly easy-win in the end for the 'Cheesemen' (of course! :roll: ) who sit 2nd in the division. Hosts apparently inspired to take their name from some Argentinian club - can't quite see the link there?
Re-completes this division for me but the Western League Premier has just lured-in/absorbed a good half-doz clubs from the SWPL - much to the detriment of that league - that has seen about as many again fold already this season.
Not quite sure why but it does seem as if some 'lifeblood' has been drawn out all in one go from what was essentially a very respectable standard Devon & Cornwall league.
Great win for St Albans against FGR
I know it's not local but nowhere else to put it
Confirms what I think when watching Brackley who are at the same level as St Albans, that there are some decent players just below National league.
Not overawed at all they deservedly won, with loads of effort but not a little skill as well.
Great advert for non league
Indeed, Braclleyare a great example....smallish crowds and revenue income too. Great management from Kevin Wilkin.
They're local to me
Big fan of Kevin W. Seems pretty calm character and gets the team playing good passing football
Are they anywhere near you?
