Four Of Clubs
Royal Rother I'm sure the betting patterns will be closely scrutinised....

(Windsor were 1-0 up at the time.)

Hmmmm indeed some chap in the bar was bemoaning the fact that he hadn't lumped on a floodlight failure @ 12-1 :?

.... 'bout time they sorted out their draught beers too - price of bottled beer is criminal especially if there is no alternative - other than abstinence.

Was there truth in the rumour that the re-match will be free entry?

Free entry for re-match is correct. Was announced upon abandonment.

Not with Windsor FC as they are newly formed this season and were put straight into Combined Counties.

Ascot United's derby matches are against Binfield, Bracknell Town, Wokingham & Emmbrook and Reading Town and Holyport.

...missed the announcement - was in the (expensive) bar 8) !

RE Ascot : just a thought but presumably another fairly 'local' derby would also be Ascot v Henley - it is scheduled for New Years eve after all - oh and the return is on Easter Sat I think? :)

Forgive 'wharfers' for missing them though cos they sneaked up with Holyport last season.
They may well struggle: L0-1 at home to Shrivvy last Saturday - who were one of the weaker sides in the Premier not that far above Henley's next opponents this Tue night (Fairford) - both adrift in the bottom three but stayed up due to ground grading difficulties elsewhere.

TBF, the last two home games have seen real ale on draught at £3 per pint. I agree though. £3.20 is steep for a bottle of Knight of the Garter but when compared with Epsom & Ewell who were charging £3.00 for bottled Banks' Bitter then it is not so bad. And don't get me on floodlight / generator failures

...quite!

It was the £3.20 for a Bud that I felt stung by -

- I'd also been told the generator was coughing, spluttering and smoking BEFORE KO last night ... and that the maintenance chap was nowhere to be found?

Though there was an ol' fellah over the far side with a small tool kit doing something with one of the Pylon boxes shortly before the failure - I hope it wasn't sabotage!

I remember long long ago at Margate, a similarly elderly gentleman used to hobble around the entire ground with a long pole and steel-capped boots kicking and prodding the lights into action!

PS Nice work on the prog by the way - you are 'involved' with that aren't you TB?

Ascot United 1 - 1 Ardley United

AUFC finished second last season so this was a great result for AUFC.

Sky TV were filming all afternoon and the actual FA Cup Trophy was at the club and it will be back on Friday night too. I was allowed to actually pick up the FA Cup Trophy ensuring that I only touched were the ribbons were tied on.

I touched the FA Cup when Reading played away at Cheltenham in the Cup many years ago. Rumour has it that there are a few copies for promotional showings - could be wrong though.

..fair number of local NL games on last night - had trouble choosing which one to go to.

CONFS

Magpies thrashed 4-0 again - this time @ Dorchester
Basingstoke bt W-S-M 4-1
Brommers W4-0 v Boreham Wood
Dover 4-0 winners @ 'Furrock'
Tonbridge 4-0 winners at York Rd on Sat were walloped 4-1 at home by Sutton.
Truro 2-1 Eastleigh
Woking 2-1 H&R

CCL
Guildford won big again 4-1 @ Cove
Ash 3-0 Dorking
Hanworth Villa 1-0 South Pk
... another problem with lights too - this time at Sandhurst where the official deemed they were not of sufficient brightness to continue whilst they led 2-0 v Banstead - league site has amended the reason to 'failure' now though - expect there's some good fallout over on FansFocus.com.

HELLP - almost a full programme - highlights (other than AUFC's point)
RTFC bt Witney 4-1
Henley won 3-1 @ Fairford - so they'll be breathing easier
Robins went down 0-1 at home to Kidlington - by accounts I've read they were dire. :?
Wantage lost @ Slimbridge, Wok & Emm went down by the odd goal in five at Thame and Holyport lost at Highworth.
In the only game NOT involving a Reserve/Development side in Div 1 East Newbury bt Woodley Town 3-1 bit of revenge there since Woodley did the double over them last season.

Similarly full programme in the SL too ;

AFC Totton bt Oxford City 6-0 in the Premier
In Div One Central there were away wins for Sluff (@ Uxbridge) & Chalfont St P. 5-1 @ Northwood; Chertsey D1-1 with AFC Hayes
In One South & West Hungerford W2-0 @ Ab.Utd (I was there good game - the tall no 7 for Hungerford stood out- Ogbanufe- played much in the style of their coach Gilkesy - only a bit bigger)
Diddy held 1-1 by Yate - Meaker scored for the visitors.

Tonight (Wed) sees a few more local sides in action: Flackwell (ooops sorry should have put Binfield  ) go to Oxford City Nomads , Fleet pop up to Bedfont Sports; Poole visit Sholing and Thatcham host Gosport Boro @ Waterside - I'm taking my younger two to this - with the promise of Cheesy Chips - hope we aren't let down.

UPDATE - well was slightly disappointing at Waterside Pk tonight - two sides fought out a tense but fairly open 0-0 - generally defences on top - Thatcham look a bit lightweight up front having lost Mpi, I think, back to Maidenhead from where he came on loan.
... and they didn't appear to be doing Cheesy Chips - just ordinary one's - daughter proclaimed the burger was A1 though!

Elsewhere Farnborough bt Salisbury 1-0 in CONFS; Fleet won 1-0 @ Bedfont T. ... and a weakened Binfield went down 2-5 @ Court Fm vs Oxford City Nomads  - rumour has it Nomads were packed with quite a few of City's 1st team squad - oddly enough a well-worn rumour whenever they do well - being mooted that a few were drafted in due to the dreadful result the night before @ Totton.
Seems Moles will continue to be understrength for this w/e Cup tie @ Scours which could be good news for RTFC ?

Isn't 'senior' Non-League football in Berkshire dying a death

Time was back in the 90s where Slough were in the Conference, Wokingham were in the Isthimian Prem (effectively equivalent level to Conf South), Maidenhead were a division below that. Bracknell were in the lower reaches of the Isthmian, Newbury Town were promoted 2 or 3 seasons in a row. Now we have Maidenhead who are (for now at least  ) Conf South, then you go down to the Southern League regional divisions to find Slough, Thatcham and Hungerford. Wokingham, Bracknell and Newbury are all playing in the Hellenic, which truth be told is barely a step up from pub football and a standard so poor you begrudge paying to watch it.

don't think it's too much of a stretch of the imagination to suggest that the success of Chelsea, Reading and Wycombe has probably caused that

Its a good point though. Berkshire is a bit of a void for decent Non League football. You can add the demise of W&E to that list and Marlow used to be a much stronger club as well, Bucks i know.

Agreed - and also that, with it obviously becoming more expensive own / run a club, the smaller clubs have fallen by the wayside.

Berkshire's not exactly the biggest of counties and, with the proximity of other clubs just outside the borders (eg Aldershot, Oxford, Swindon - even Woking & Farnborough - and that's before you even get to London) sustaining the number of clubs at their levels in the 90's was always going to be a struggle.

Of the imagination, no, but of reality, it would be.

Wokingham and Slough plunged because financial troubles cost them their stadiums. Slough couldn't really afford to be in the conference, and improvements Wokingham made to allow them to go up (even though they didn't make it) knackered them severely.

Newbury were being bankrolled way beyond their means by a rich owner, and it went tits up when he pulled the plug.

Bracknell have always struggled. Their ground, despite being a dump, is hidden away down a lane. It's so out of sight, out of mind, that many people in the town probably have no idea where the ground is. The 80s were the club's peak. They only got into the rymans league in the early 80s and rose to the 2nd tier (when there were four tiers) but couldn't sustain it and dropped down. The reality is that the club has traditionally been a Hellenic league level club, and struggled to make the transition beyond that.

First Berkshire Club exits the FA Cup with Ascot United losing 2-1 to a last minute winner by Combined Counties Wembley. You probably all know but the game was the first to be streamed live on Facebook. I am not a faceybooky sort of person but am told it was a decent game considering the levels the two teams play at.
