Good luck to Simon Cox, Irish grandmother apparently.

Am I right in thinking Cox will be only the second home-grown player from our academy to play at the top level? I'm not including Gylfi as we brought him in from Iceland, was Adie Williams a 'youth player' with Reading? Who else have I missed?

I think it is interesting how many of our squad are English, but play for other countries (including youth levels).

Jem Karacan, Jay Tabb, Mikele Leigertwood, Jobi McAnuff, Simon Church, Hal Robson-Kanu, Jake Taylor and Alex Pearce.

As a short aside, reminds me of a football law I embarassingly didn't know. That players can play a full friendly international for a country and still opt to play for another, it is only the competitive games that tie a player in, hence for example Danny Welbeck can still choose to play for Ghana should he want.

Not sure why that was news to me.

If you had family from another country and you didn't fancy your chances of getting in the England team I guess it's always an option to have a go at international football.

With my Welsh grandfather, my chances of a career in the game still has some hope!

yeah I'm with you there Stuka, the rules are the rules so make the most of it.

I think the grandparent rule is fair enough given how much people move around these days. Less sure about getting players on national teams through naturalisation, which seems to happen more on the continent.
