FA Cup - MK Dons

by MouldyRoyal » 13 Nov 2012 15:57

Tonight MK Dons take on Cambridge City in the FA Cup, the winner will go through to play against the League 2 side...AFC Wimbledon.

This nearly happened last year and a lot of the media made out like this would be the first clash of a pair of rivals. In reality the relationship between MK Dons and AFC Wimbledon doesn't appear to be a rivalry. AFC fans seem to prefer to not even acknowledge MKD's existence rather than want to create some competition between the two clubs. I know many AFC fans were considering boycotting any match with MKD when it was being discussed last year.

If MK Dons do win tonight, it will be interesting to see not only what will happen at the next round match, but how much journalists try to create a relationship between the clubs that isn't realistic. One to keep an eye on.

Also, local journalism has brought us this magical piece of writing which discusses the potential clash from an MK point of view while failing to say one particular word...

Cringeworthy article. I think it's fair to say nearly every football fan in the country will be cheering on what the article refers to as the "Kingston upon Thames-based club" when the teams finally meet.

What is cringeworthy about the article? It seems fair enough.

Stuka Cringeworthy article. I think it's fair to say nearly every football fan in the country will be cheering on what the article refers to as the "Kingston upon Thames-based club" when the teams finally meet.

It was a rather strange article. I can't imagine MK fans having a real dislike of Wimbledon to that extent, so it comes across as something written by a 17 year old fanzine writer.

There's not a great deal of love about for MK, unsurprisingly, but I actually think it would be quite funny if they won 5-0 or something like that.

I don't dislike Wimbledon at all, but they are sort of the Jade Goody of football. Ridiculed and regarded with disdain by most until their death, then that part's whitewashed and they are regarded as some kind of national treasure.

Never claimed it to be a "shocker". Thought it was amusing that it couldn't say Wimbledon.

Good analogy, nails it.

Some do, some really do. There were some (old) Wimbledon supporters who regard MKD as the continuation of the old club, and so transferred their allegiance up the M1. Some of them, as well as the AFCW supporters, are still massively bitter and entrenched.

The sooner they meet for the first time the better, get it out the way and move on with their clubs.

MK are winning 5-1 so it looks like this tie is finally going to happen.

AFC have threatened not to take any fans......but my mate who is a season ticket holder for them thinks it would be much better if they took a full away following...

I think it would also be wrong for the club to take away the choice from their supporters.

A protest, after all, is pretty meaningless if you are forced into it.

Not sure whether the rules would allow AFC to refuse any away tickets but they'd be stupid not to accept the maximum allocation for there will be plenty of non AFC fans wanting to take their place offering support for AFC.

Really? I'be not heard that. The official AFCW statements are saying that they'll follow the rules of the competition and treat this as any other game.

The rules say they can ask for whatever allocation they want, from zero upwards - but I don't think this is a real rumour. Why would they do this?

A very good thread on the MK Dons forum that I had a gander of yesterday. 'The lies of AFC Wimbledon'.

AFCW really is a club for self important dicks.
