Howard Webb

by Sanguine » 19 Feb 2014 11:12

Worth a new thread I thought - relating to Webb's non-decisions at the weekend, interesting* statistical analysis of how Webb's refereeing has changed, specificaly that he makes far fewer 'crucial and game-changing decisions since his profile increased.

small samples*, relatively small %dif in events that don't happen that regularly...written by a Journalist making assumptions

I've not read it but am guessing it'll go along those lines

(*a large sample would be studying the brownian motion of a yeast sample for a period of time not a few games of football)

yeast sample? paint drying?

Looking at it, you could probably make a stab at estimating significance. There's hundreds of results cited for the total pool of refs, plus they're comparing a similar number of decisions for the same man before and after a point.

Fair enough, I thought a sample as big as Howard Webb’s entire refereeing career and that of others whilst he has been refereeing was significant enough to at least notice trends in how he has refereed before and after a certain point in time.

Looked more than just a massive coincidence.

Lesson of the day. Know your audience.

oh look, bitter Liverpool fan moaning about a ref's performance costing them a game.

I found the article interesting - it highlighted Webb's non-decision to send Gerrard off too. Given how much teeth-gnashing there can be following referees' performances I thought it worth posting as it was for once a complete statistical analysis of what a ref is and isn't doing in the games he is in charge of.

Nothing to do with Liverpool. The central point of the article, that as a referee Webb is now different, would support what has been written on here before about the guy, that he maybe isn't 'our best ref' any more, much like Poll was, and then wasn't.
