Been meaning to start a thread on old football stuff for a while and keep forgetting. So here it is. Love reading about football in olden times, the place in society it held, tactics, rivalries, etc

To Start it off, here is Alf Common who twice was the record transfer fee, becoming the first £1000 football transfer in 1905



He was 6ft 8", but as heading footballs back then would have not been pleasant I assume everyone said of him that he had a 'good touch for a big lad'

Eusebio is my contribution. 733 goals in 745 career games, most of them for Benfica. The forgotten (because we won it) star of the '66 World Cup, and someone whose name rarely seems to be mentioned in the 'greatest of all-time' conversation, it seems he suffers from not being Pele at a time when Pele was being Pele.

Like Pele, Eusebio mixed sublime skill on the ball with immense power. And arguably the first world-class African born player to emerge.

What makes him stand out for me, if I watch videos of Eusebio, he looks like a modern-day footballer super-imposed on to old footage. Finishes with the outside of the boot, Bergkamp-like close control, bullying defenders off the ball, dribbling with pace and purpose.

Dixie Dean deserves a mention. 425 goals in 489 games including a season with 60 league goals, 67 overall. At one point for Everton he scored 283 in 265 over 7 years.

First ever football international was England Vs Scotland in November 1872. It finished 0-0. international friendlies were f*cking sh*t back then too

The scotland team was actually the Queens Park team, but England was selected from various clubs. Goalkeeping duties were rotated within the teams during the match. England played 8 forwards, Scotland played 6

4 months later they played each other at The Oval and England won 4-2 (ICH!)

I will need to go back through The Ball Is Round which is kind of the definitive on football history as the origins in this country are really interesting. Scotland and the North West of England are where it really got going. Midlands and down south we had public schools playing but making up their own rules.

Corner flags, or flags in general.

Interesting one this. Before the unified set of football laws were introduced in 1877 by the newly formed FA, football was generally played using 'Sheffield Rules', and certainly by its original clubs in Sheffield and the Midlands. One of those rules involved the scoring of 'rouges', which was where the ball was kicked over the goal-line four yards either side of the goal post, and touched down by the attacking team. These weren't scored as goals, but number of 'rouges' was used to split a tied game. Interesting for me in that the 'rouge', although not called that, is still used in Aussie rules football.

The corner flag as we know it today are those flags that marked out 'rouges', moved back to the corners of the pitch.

Corner flags were traditionally triangular - and whilst there is nothing in law that prescribes it, and most clubs use rectangular flags, it has become somewhat accepted that only clubs who have won the FA Cup should use triangular flags.

The League Cup, currently the EFL Cup, formerly The Littlewoods Cup, The Rumbelows Cup, and many other incarnations. Was introduced only in 1960, with two purposes - one to replace potential lost revenue for clubs, as a league restructuring had been proposed reducing clubs per division, and second as a midweek floodlit competition, with most clubs having installed floodlights in the preceding few years, and the FA look for ways to increase dwindling attendances.

William Fatty Foulke, so fat and big he once broke the crossbar



Foulke was renowned for his great size (6 ft 9 in (2.06 m) by some estimates) and weight, reaching perhaps 24 stones (152 kg; 336 lb) at the end of his career, although reports on his weight vary

Opposing forwards who incurred his displeasure would be picked up and thrown bodily into his goal.
