That's a myth.
Scholes is deffo one of them players that suddenly got rated way higher towards the end of his career/after finishing than when he was playing. I am going to call it the Pirlo rating scale

I think it was based on a made up quote from Zidane or Xavi saying that Scholes was the best midfielder in the world.

Yeah I have seen that one.
I heard a pundit talk about how Pirlo is viewed here a year or so ago. Said the rest of Europe appeared to rate him quite highly throughout his career and stuck with that, but in the UK it was like we realised we had taken our eye off the ball and not noticed him until he was near the end of his career and so are trying to compensate for that by claiming him to be one of the greatest of all time and using him as the yardstick for all great centre midfielders. This also apparently bemuses Italians.

From Despair To Where? He's a better footballer than John Smith is a poster, although Stephen Hawking was too.

Yeh, reckon it was 2012 WC we probably first started rating him. So a year after he signed for Juve, having played 300 games for Milan, and probably had 80+ caps for Italy. I don't think I even knew he played for Milan until 5 mins ago.
