Ups & Downs 24/25

by Winston Biscuit » 25 Feb 2025 09:46

Its about that time of year again

Leeds winning last night feels like it cements them as going up. Realistically only only one of Shef Utd or Burnley will join them in the auto spots. both utterly dull clubs so don't really care which, but I would LOL a bit if SU miss out due to their points deduction.

Leeds also have quite a nice set of fixtures.

3rd game from the end of the season is Burnley Vs Shef Utd

The bottom of the Champ looks decent as no one is cut adrift and its looking like any 3 from 6, maybe even from 7 if you wanted to include Oxford. Pompey's recent good run may well have done enough to keep them away from it all

Derby's last 4 games of the season are Luton, West Brom, Hull & Stoke

My preference would be Luton, Derby & Cardiff

Lolz at the number of draws Burnley have had. What is the record for a season? Edit, just checked, seems to be 23, they might not reach that.

honestly never had an issue with Oxford. If they stay up or go down I have no feeling around it.

Don’t like Arsenal or Chelsea either but I accept they are a different galaxy to us.

The FL fined Sheffield Utd 2 points last year saying they would start their next season season in the Championship on -2. United broke FL rules by defaulting on payments to other clubs during their 2022-23 promotion season.

Juventus are doing similar in Serie A, they have drawn 13 of 26 league games. 4th place and have only lost once.

The Championship play-off picture is incredibly open. One of Burnley or Sheff Utd will be in, and joined by Sunderland. But below that there only seven points between West Brom in 5th (51) and QPR in 14th (44).

Middlesbrough (13th) are in freefall. They were sitting comfortably in the playoff spots but have lost their last five.

Sheff Utd now level on points with LOLeeds. Burnley just two points behind. It would be really sad if Leeds dropped out of the top 2.

Yeah, I mean I was 100% team-Robins, but that sacking is looking inspired now. Fair play, Frank Lampard.

Just looking at the table today and West Brom in 5th have only won 13 of their 37 games only 1 more than 16th placed Swansea - they have drawn 17 times.

Seems crazy that 2 of the top 4 good potentially lose out on promotion to a side so far behind them - gap from Sunderland in 4th to WBA in 5th is 13 points.

See even the Serie B format wouldn't work in this instance, because the playoffs for teams in 3rd to 8th in that division are only cancelled if the gap between 3rd and 4th is too large. I think there is a league, I forget which one, with promotion play-offs where only those teams within x points of 3rd spot take part, which seems a good solution. As the league is panning out this season, it would certainly feel 'fair' if the playoffs only included the teams in 3rd and 4th.

QPR's fourth consecutive defeat has probably cut them adrift now. But Millwall in 13th remain just eight points behind 6th placed Coventry.

That was also Serie B. It used to be a question over whether they went ahead based on the gap between 3rd and 4th, and then if they did go ahead there was also another points gap that determined how many teams were involved. I think they scrapped that 2nd part though and its just standard as 6 teams involved now (if they go ahead)

9 games to go and I am going to be crazily bold by saying the bottom 3 in the Prem are gone!

Southampton obv. Leicester are sh*te but their run in is also really difficult so they are gone. Ipswich have Wolves in 2 games time and that may well effectively seal it anyway, but they are sh*te and Wolves run it is a nice one and they will get some wins.

I'd go as far as Burton too - they still have to play five of the current top six. Odd with nine games to go, but I think League One relegation is done.
