Historic Football Quiz

by stealthpapes » 04 Mar 2025 07:55

On this day last year, my local made the grave mistake of letting me set the pub quiz.

This is the football round. There's a theme, but it's more General Football than Team Board.

Round 3: historic football round
1 Goalkeeper Steve Death went 1074 minutes with conceding a goal in the 1978-79 season. But which goalkeeper holds the British record for his efforts for Rangers in 1986-87? And for a bonus point, how many games (to the nearest game) did he not concede a goal for?

2 Reading FC hold the record for consecutive wins at the start of the season, with 13. But which team in a different division ran them close, winning ten games before a 1-1 draw with Luton. Bonus point, in which season did the two teams put together their winning streaks.

3 Lawrie Sanchez made his debut as a schoolboy for Reading FC before moving on to Wimbledon FC and as well as playing for and managing Northern Ireland. What other country could he have represented but declined the opportunity to do so.

4 Reading FC hold the record for most points accumulated in a single season, in the 3 pts for a win era. Which team would also match that total if their record season, in 1975-76, was played according to the same rules, as opposed to 2 pts for a win. Bonus point, which future England manager was in charge of that team that season?

5 Peter Shilton made his 996th career start playing for which team that made the 1994/95 First Division play-off final, ultimately securing promotion to the top flight after extra time?

6 Who did Reading FC play against in the highest scoring Premier League game to date? Bonus point for naming who scored a hat-trick in that game.

7 Reading FC also played in the second highest scoring Premier League game ever, a record now shared with four other games. Who did they play against in this game? Bonus point for naming who scored a hat-trick in that game.

8 By what other name was the Simod Cup, a tournament introduced in 1985 to replace European football, known by? Bonus points, four teams declined to enter each season despite being full members of the Football League. Point for each team.

9 Which is the only non-English team to win the FA Cup? Bonus point if you can name the year.

10 Which English player started their career at Reading before a big money move to Chelsea where they were awarded PFA Player of the Year in 2018, placed in the top ten of 2021’s Ballon d’Or, and were part of the 2022 European Championship winning side.

I would like to see what the 85/86 season table looked like after 13 games. considering we got 39 points from the first possible 39, finishing only 7 points ahead of 2nd place by the end shows how much things changed

82.6% win rate in the first half of the season
43.4% win rate in the 2nd half of the season

I wonder if the end of the season had a feeling of the 01/02's about it where we were confident of going up but stumbled towards the line

Didn't Berbatov score the hatrick in the 6-4 game vs Spurs.

The Chelsea question is a good one - Fran Kirby.

It did. Reading were past 60 points by the New Year and the rest of the season just went down the toilet by comparison, typically characterised by a 6-0 stuffing at Fellowes Park (Walsall) in February.

Results went: WWWWWWWWWWWWWDLWWWLDWWWW - New Year - LDDLWWLLWWWLLDWDWDLWLW

Don't really remember us stumbling towards the line, we were 20 points clear at Christmas and it was gradually whittled down but I don't remember there being much concern about being caught. The form after new year looks bad but we still picked up 32pts in 22 games which is a 69pt (comfortably top half) season.

#5 wrong, read question again.

#8 mostly there, Screen Sport cup is something else - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_League_Super_Cup
Full Members Cup is formal name, it had another sponsor.

Yup, Berbatov got 4.

Between 63rd and 83rd minute in that game, there were seven goals.

3b - which school, now no longer in existence, did he attend?
3c - which two Reading bars did he own with his brother (1 point for each)

9b - surely this is crying out for which team did they beat in the semi-final?

Sutekh [....characterised by a 6-0 stuffing at Fellowes Park (Walsall) in February.

name the Walsall keeper who gave it the biggie towards the travelling support behind his goal when the 5th and 6th goals went in (and maybe more but I wasn't watching him at the time)

Sanchez obviously could have played for England as well (born in London).

In fact, he did play twice for England Schools U18, although that's based on where your school is rather than standard international eligibility rules.

Should have been one less as I remember as the two clubs were saddled with a ref that didn’t know the laws of the game about penalties.

Was there! My programme (remember those?) says Steve Cherry, all I can remember of the game itself was the ball being continually put out for throw ins. Ground is a Halfords or something now I think

Bolton for Shilts, threw me as he wasn’t in goal for the Final so thought he was still player/manager at Plymouth.

The only other name I can think of for the Full Members was the Data System or something cup. That was after it was the Simod.

Yeah, it's clearly a Reading FC themed football round in a stealthpapes-themed quiz.

Other rounds were - British Overseas Territories, On This Day, Railway Towns, Tilehurst People, Words Beginning with ... and Chemical Elements.
I almost got lynched.

EDIT this is the Tilehurst Round

Round 4 – Tilehurst (and nearby)

1 Bryan Adams actually spent the summer of 1969 in Reading, buying his first guitar that year. How many weeks was Everything I Do I Do It For You top of the UK charts?

2 Jacqueline Bissett and a white T-shirt were prominent in the marketing of which 1977 thriller, also starring Robert Shaw, Nick Nolte and Louis Gossett Jr

3 Kenneth Branagh’s family moved to Tilehurst from which Northern Irish city, also the title of a Kenneth Branagh movie

4 Tim Dinsdale spent much of his life trying to prove the existence of which possibly mythical animal?

5 Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells soundtracks which 1973 horror movie

6 Ayrton Senna lived in Reading at the start of his racing career, with a street in Tilehurst now named after him. How many Formula One world championships did he win?

7 Felix Bowness, who played Fred Quilley in comedy series Hi De Hi, finished his career as warm-up act for which long running Saturday night entertainment show famous for its location in the village of Crinkley Bottom.

8 What is the name of David Brent’s band in the TV show, The Office

9 How many winners of the million pounds on offer were there in the original run of Who Wants to Be A Millionaire, presented by Reading-born (and Royals supporting) Chris Tarrant?

10 Kate Winslet made her TV debut in BBC science fiction drama Dark Season, written by which Welsh Screenwriter and television producer
