Will England qualify for Euro 2008?

by Royal Rother » 04 Jun 2007 22:31

Personally I feel pretty confident we won't.

The evidence is staring us in the eyes that we are just not good enough, yet it seems that it is easier to bury the heads in the sand rather than face the facts.

McLaren - v - Hiddink for 6 points? Now how many points are we likely to get from those encounters?

And although Estonia haven't got a point (or a goal yet!) they have only lost 1-0, 2-0 and 1-0 at home to Israel, Russia and Croatia, so I don't see any reason for much confidence about even that game.

I'd be surprised if we didn't win tomorrow night and am about 50/50 on us getting trough the group.

It all comes down to a couple of games really, but dropping the points we already have has left us with quite a task to qualify, and I do doubt that McLaren can organise a side to do it.

We're probably sneak through by the skin of our teeth. And immediately be extolled as the next European Champions by the press.

I just can't see England qualifying, they still have top play Russia twice and I think they'll be lucky to get a point out of those 2 games, that will finish off their chances. Hopefully they'll be out of it early doors so McLOLaren's replacement can use the remaining games to work out the future

Think you're right - 4 out of our last 6 games are at home (with Estonia being one of the away games). We'll just about spawn the second qualifying spot.

It's great that this is a poll, which means I can go back and find it when we qualify and laugh at you all miserable negative bastards.

They probably will, but really can't afford to lose again.

P W D L F A GD PTS
1 Croatia 6 5 1 0 16 4 12 16
2 Israel 7 4 2 1 15 7 8 14
3 Russia 6 4 2 0 11 1 10 14
4 England 6 3 2 1 9 2 7 11
5 FYR Macedonia 7 2 1 4 6 7 -1 7
6 Estonia 6 0 0 6 0 11 -11 0
7 Andorra 6 0 0 6 1 26 -25 0

Just noticed that Russia go to Croatia tomorrow night.

So best results for us will be a Croatia win to go with a 2-0 win for us. That'll put us 2nd, having played the same amount of games as Russia and Israel.

Will pretty much then be down to the two games against Russia as Croatia will be all but there.

No it won't - we'll still be 4th as it is all to do with head to head. As I outlined on an earlier thread regarding the Euro qualifying, the current head to head in our group is as follows:

Israel - 0-0 v England (H), 1-1 v Russia (A)
Russia - 1-1 v Israel (H)
England - 0-0 v Israel (A)

So, Israel have 2 points from the head to heads whereas us and the Russians have 1 point. The Russians have scored 1 goal to our 0 so they are above us.

Russia could lose 25-0 tomorrow and we win 50-0 and we'd still be behind them.

Ah, sorry. Thought GD was first then Head to Head.

Nope - as with all UEFA run competitions, it's head to head first then GD.

Personally, I'd prefer a draw in the Croatia game.

Has it always been like this? If so, that's totally crap, GD should come first.

It actually makes sense if you think about it.

If you've got two or three sides finishing on the same points, what's a better way to decide who is better - the results between the teams that played on the fact that one team got 10 goals in two games against Andorra whilst another only got 6.

Then it just becomes "Who can score the most goals against Andorra?" which is a somewhat flawed way of deciding which team is better.

The whole point of GD is to encourage attacking play and goals, isn't it?

Especially if you only manage to score 3

It is but are you honestly saying that if we end up on the same points as say Russia having lost away and drawn at home to them, we'd deserve to qualify because we scored more goals against Andorra?

I'm not disagreeing with the concept of head-to-head especially what you said in response to my post - it does make sense, actually. I was just responding to RR to say why I thought GD was a good method.
