The BBC can actually f*ck off

by floyd__streete » 16 Jan 2008 22:02

Havant and Waterlooville - romance of the cup and all that - edge out Swansea in what sounded like a belting tie to earn the plum draw of Liverpool away. Yet the lucky viewer has been treated to an hour and a half of utter toss between Man City and West Ham, a run of the mill Premier League fixture. In Round 4 we have the enticing prospect of Wigan vs Chelsea and Manchester United being covered for the 97th cup round in a row by Auntie. Makes you laugh, they wheel out tired old Motty - who in a more liberal, euthanasia embracing culture would have been put down years ago - trotting out the old giantkilling cliche's yet his paymasters always accomodate tedious looking FA Cup ties between Premier League teams who know each other inside out.

And don't get me started on Match of the Day. This used to be a highlight of a Saturday night in but it is now a dreadful programme with an over-used panel of 'experts' who add precisely zero to my viewing pleasure. The nadir came Saturday last when that staple diet of the Goal of the Month competition popped up.....just for fun, smugly retorted Lineker. No premium bonds, no pair of tickets for a match of your choosing.....surely the BBC could have dusted down an old copy of Des Lynam's autobiography?

Thanks to the unique way the BBC is funded.....the only sport we do show is covered appalingly.

I wonder whether MOTD seems pretty sub-standard now because they do (generally pretty banal) interviews after almost every game (takes up a couple of minutes thus reducing the time for highlights) and of course the fact that we can see as much full-game football as we could possibly want on Sky, and every Saturday game (bar Setanta's game of course) on Football First. Brief highlights just don't hack it anymore.

MOTD gets slated on here for not analysing every important incident in every Reading game, but was it ever any different?

Could the fans get something changed about their insistence on covering Manchester united every time?

Aston Villa vs Manchester United has come up 4 times in recent years and has been televised each time. And the game has been the same each time - Villa start well, fail to take enough of a lead and late United goals do them.

Why televise it again?

Surely there's something that can be done, just to register some level of protest against this? Row Z Royal did mention that red button could be used to show two games. Perhaps today would have been a perfect time for that - put Havant on the red button menu and the all Premiership game that people would see on television many times over can have a much needed alternative.

Floyd - I thought that the Goal of the Month was no longer a competition as a result of that phone-in scandal that rocked the BBC and Blue Peter to its core.

For once I agree entirely with every point you make, and I too thought the same.

I can't help but feel bitter about it. When the fixture was released I did think Why? I'm not sure I'd want to watch a league tie, so what's so special about a cup tie with those two teams who have played each other about 50 times.

As you say, with Havant and Waterlooville vs Swansea both teams would love the chance to play Liverpool and it's a huge event for both sets of fans, so why not show that?

Maybe it is due to what the BBC think most people would want - an all premiership tie. Although I'm not sure. Most armchair fans would probably have sky sports wouldn't they? So they get their fair share of premierleague football. I don't see how anyone would be more likely to watch a boring match between another two premiership teams, compared to a match between smaller teams but both playing for a HUGE prize.

Again, I can't help but feel bitter and fecked off.

Although I feel your negativity on the Team board is bordering on the obsessive compulsve I agree with just about every word you've typed.

....they prefer it because they've been brought up on sky to believe that any football outside the premiership is rubbish and boring, and any match at all involving the big 4 is a must see event.

Don't think your complaint should be directed at the BBC. I'm almost certain they got it right. Sadly. I'm pretty sure they accurately predicted what the public wanted. It's all about the Premiership now.

Why are you surprised though?

There is no chance they will get anything at liverpool, or even score a goal for that matter. Competitive football is capped these days because of the money involved.
People want to see a competitive game, wigan vs chelsea is just that, and it could go either way. This will be an 8-0 liverpool with a goal coming in the first 10 minutes, no point in watching it IMO.

'Greed

Would much rather have watched the Havant game, 6 goals, a missed pen, and the woodwork was struck at least twice, proper cup football

papereyes Why televise it again?

Demand from real supporters.

1000's of United fans couldn't get their hands on tickets for the game so the BBC do the right thing in showing it.

Havant get 400 fans a game, if you're a true Havant fan then you can go. Football isn't about 'interest' it's about passion, in in letting the real fans watch their clubthe BBC have done the right thing.
