Whats the best game you missed.

by Beelzebub » 21 Jan 2008 21:37

Nothing more annoying than not being able to get to a game that turned out to be a historic moment or a classic encounter.

My most annoying missed games are,

1- Reading V Plymouth at Elm Park. The forman said to me on the Friday, you will be in tomorrow won't you, not likely I said, Reading are at home. Well you had better be at work or don't bother coming Monday.
So off to work I went. When the radio said we were 0-3 down with 20 mins to go I was over the moon. - We won 4-3.

2- I have to take my hols last 2 weeks in August, so missed our first game in the premiership.

3- Reading 3 Liverpool 1 - had to go to work and my wife used my ticket-Grrr.

Reading vs Bolton, Elm Park, April 1995.

Left it a bit late leaving home, and when I got to EP it was sold out - even though I had a season ticket. Heard the goals on the radio driving home

Chelsea vs Man Utd in 2002 was scheduled to clash with our historic game against Brentford and so we turned down free tickets. The game was then moved for TV and it turned into an absolute classic of a title decider

Reading 3-2 The Albion

About two years ago in the FA Cup 3rd Rnd replay. Couldnt be arsed to travel from Pompey, I was pleased I hadn't wasted my money at half time. One of those things

Liverpool winning the European Cup in '05.

I was at my other half's sister's 18th birthday.

In a tent.

In Wellington Country Park.

In order of MOST disappointed to least.

Leicester City vs Reading in 2006. Will never get over that.

Reading vs Liverpool in December 2007. Disappointed to miss it.

had to miss the 2nd half of extra time and penalties in the simod cup semi-final, as I had to dash back to town to catch the last train home.

I knew we'd win somehow, and I heard the roar when Gilkes scored the winning penalty as I passed Burger King. One sustained cheer. I knew it had to be us winning, but I didn't know for sure until I got home and checked on ceefax.

Other than that I've missed about half a dozen home games since I started going in the mid 80s, and the only won the we won was the 3-1 win over Aldershot. We drew 2-2 with Birmingham in another and lost all the rest. The first two I couldn't get to were on boxing day, and I couldn't go as I didn't drive at the time, and there was no public transport.

The others have been...
Reading 1 Cambridge 2 (FA Cup) missed through illness
Reading 1 Luton 2 (stag weekend in Dublin)
Reading 0 Norwich 2 (night out with very attractive female friend, arranged on the basis that we always played on a tuesday, not a wednesday - and no it certainly wasn't worth it, but I didn't miss much)
Reading 0 Portsmouth 2 (away on holiday, safe in the knowledge that games v pompey are always crap)

I think there's another, and we lost that one too, I'm sure.

I can remember my dad coming home very late and possibly very drunk tumbling into my bedroom, singing something about Ian's Army and asking me whether I wanted to go to Wembley. Unfortunately a midweek Simod Cup semi final was no excuse for an 8 year old to have had a late night at the football with school the following day.

As a youth I decided hanging around the benches in broad Street would be more fun than RFC v PLymouth
Flew to New York the night of the second leg of the playoffs v Wigan
Went to the wife's cousin's wedding the day we played our first ever premiership game

Plymouth is probably the one I regret most

Never missed one.

I guess the real choker was not going to Leicester away, the day we got promoted. Just had a new born nipper so couldn't afford many away trips that season (or leave the Mrs with a six month screamer). So watched Gillette Soccer Special down the boozer with a couple of non-Reading fans, and in fairness most of the punters offered their congratulations but I actually felt a bit sad that I wasn't at the game. I should've been there.

I missed out last league game at Elm Park at Norwich becuase I was at Uni in Scotland. Was gutted about that, but I did make the Sheff Weds game in preseason so got a chance to say goodbye to the place

Leicester away, I'll never get over that. I realise the result was irrelevant and we would have got promotion even if we'd lost. Even so it was still one of those occasions when those who went can look back and say 'I was there'.

I missed the away leg of the Tranmere play-off semi final, thinking it would be on TV. I was in Manchester at the time, couldn't believe that they showed Bolton v Wolves instead.

I also missed the 6-0 tonking of Wet Sham as I left it too late to buy a ticket -they'd sold out!

You must have been gutted. Gilkesy's pen and us running on the pitch. One of the greatest RFC moments ever.

I too arrived too late even with a ticket however I managed to nip round and climb over the wall the back of theTilehurst before 'Big Clive' realised what was happening and prevent others from doing so.

The main one i regret missing was Derby when we were crowned champions although I was at Leicester away when we were promoted so that makes me feel a bit better!

Probably the 1966 or 1970 World Cup final.

It would have been great to see Reading FC's first ever game, but I missed that one too.

You mean you weren't there? Plastic  . Load of rubbish it was, dull 0-0. They didn't even have bloody crossbars and the pitch was covered in dog sh*t. Sydenham out.
