David Beckham

by Tredder » 25 Mar 2008 09:06

I'm now in the David Bentley camp for the right midfield spot but i have to say that giving Beckham his 100th cap would be fitting to a player that played with great pride and vigour.

Certain 'good' England moments are difficult to remember as we generally are left feeling let down but Euro '96 and the Holland game, beating Germany 1-0 and 5-1 in their own backyard rate highly, but for pure 'Walkabout' emotion then the Greece game rates right up there, to think that we were virtually out and up pops Beckham, in a game that he had worked his socks off for the cause, and rifles a free kick in the bottom left hand corner, cue glorious scenes in the Walkabout.

So, i hope you get the 100th cap on wednesday Mr Beckham and it's fully deserved imo, but this should be it and let's look to the future of the national team and Mr Beckham no longer a member of future squads.

Thanks Becks and a trademark free kick on wednesday would be fitting.

More than deserves the 100th cap and so very pleased for him.

The standard he's playing at though, I don't think he'll play another game at international level. Fit or not.

Legend.

Was Beckham even in the Euro 1996 squad?

It just seems an odd game to include in his 'epitaph'.

Given his crossing and dead ball skills I would still include Beckham in the EngLOLand squad while he's fit, the fact he's playing in the states is irrelevant IMO. I also think he'd still be going extremely strongly for England if Mclown hadn't decided all he had to do to be his own man was drop Beckham

I was stating my moments of joy as an England supporter in general, the games mentioned are my ultra highlights but the Greece game where he played was right up there amongst the ones mentioned, this being for pure beer in the air orgasmic England joy.

But feel free to add any others.

I believe he was in the squad, but didn't get a game due to Darren Anderton and Steve McManaman.

I could be completely wrong though.

EDIT: Yep, completely wrong http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_UEFA_ ... ds#England

I was half expecting a murking as he'd scored in the first game of 1995/96 season but I thought it was only under Hoddle that he got his debut.

Steve Howey?

I'm with Tredder on this one - I don't mind him winning that 100th cap at all, and would like him to sign off in style tomorrow, but I really hope it's the end of the sideshow after this.

Still think it's too soon to call time completely on his international career considering in the last few games he was the one player showing any spark of creativity. The position is there for Bentley to make his own but Beckham still has enough about him to warrant a place in the squad, which, to be fair to the man, is more or less where he's set his sights.

I would rather have:

a David Beckham who isn't at his best, and is a tiny bit off the pace BUT displays absolute pride, motivation and passion with every stride he takes.

than a typical player who happens to be wearing an England shirt and seems disinterested for the entire match.

With all the fuss over 100 caps playing in a side that never wins anything I wondered about Thuram of France and checked the stats.
Tonight he will win his 137th cap for France and of course has won a World Cup winners medal plus a European Champs medal.
As for Beckham forget what he did or didn't do in the past and put him go out to grass in the USA and let Bentley get on with the job of trying to get us qualified for the next World Cup.

He may have grown up by then and realise that playing for your country at any level is an honour.

Just Beckham to start.

So he should get a decent send off from the travelling England fans when he is substituted for Bentley.
