Greatest ever saves

by Jerry St Clair » 19 Sep 2008 12:37

Banks against Pele in 1970 is routinely trotted out as being the Greatest Ever Save. It is, if you will, the Sgt Pepper of goalkeeping saves.

But are there any other challengers for the title? Are saves by goalkeepers in the modern era (against faster, lighter, swerving balls) better?

The one in the Leeds - Sunderland FA Cup Final is the best in my eyes...

Some great saves of recent years include Schmeicel for City at Liverpool last day of the 02/03 season when he tipped it up onto the bar, Schmeicel for United against Inter and Kusczack for West Brom against Wigan 2 years ago.

Grobelaar v Everton in an 80s cup final (86?) when he was dicking about on the left, got caught out and then somehow managed to tip a shot over that was always going in

I think thats a bit harsh on Banks, his save is not overrated or fuelled by drugs.

Just watching United over the years I've seen saves at least on a par with Banks. I think that save got so much respect due to the occasion and fact it was from Pele. Even last night Zhieler* pulled a better save off in United reserves, a point blank power header in the corner.

Best save I've seen never gets any mention at all, but it was unbelievable, phenomenal. Kusczack at St Andrews last year. A powerful shot from 18 yards sends Kusczack one way, about 10 yards left for the ball to travel and Kusczack is pretty much on the floor covering the shot, it gets deflected and Kusczack somehow springs up the opposite way and tips it around the post.

Jim Leighton's double save at Elm Park, can't remember who it was against but saved one shot going bottom left, bounced up and managed to save a follow up heading for the top right.

Banks' save was superb, to get it over the bar was the impressive thing as his body weight is going down, strong hands.

Remember Schmiechel making a similar save against Volograd or someone dump away in the champions league that was a great stop.

Jaaskelainen has made a few in recent years, also David James makes them on a weekly basis. I actually saw one last season that was sensational, Saul Deeney of Burton albion, cross in from the right so he is shuffling across his line from near post to far, header back from where it came by Sills, going in the top corner, with Deeney's feet going the opposite way he has stretched with one arm getting his fingertips to it and turning it over, was a ridiculous save.

Jim Leighton's greatest save for us was away at Hull, one of their players shot from the left, Leighton dived for it, it was deflected and somehow he turned and tipped it away, the whole crowd gave him a standing ovation - it was AWESOME. Witnessed by less than a hundred loyal Royals.

Routine save.

Seaman as mentioned is one of the best in recent times.

Routine?!

Here it is. He's basically on the floor when he somehow jumps up. This angle doesn't do it justice.

Seaman's was over rated. No agility, just used the full stretch of his arm to fish the ball out, which wasn't travelling with any pace.

There is no comparing the two, seamans save was 10 times better.
I couldn't remember the save you were on about so i watched the vid, completely routine IMO.

Are you for real? Just watched it again with an open mind and its a save you would expect him to make - reactions good yes.....but that was it i.e. good reactions.
