Do footballers actually get paid per week?

by DaveM » 30 Oct 2009 10:22

Do footballers actually receive a weekly salary, as quoted often in the media, or do they receive a monthly salary like most normal people?

Paid monthly - but the figures are so large they are quoted weekly for more impact.

Not sure as £120k a week for example makes it sound more as you can do the he earns X times more in a week than I do.

But 20k is the sort of money that people can understand so presenting £20k a week seems a lot more palatable than presenting it as over a £million a year.

Quarter a million a month sounds obscene and overpaid, 65k per week sounds less as people don't do the maths and work out how many "hospitals a year" a footie player is paid

The numbers are just astronomical. If you earn £70k a year, before tax, you are fairly well off. Riise earned £80k in a month ater tax. Obscene!

I think it all goes back to when most workers were paid weekly.
Now that they are miles removed from workers they are deemed to be professionals and get paid monthly.
It mirrors the fact that they can no longer relate to the man (or woman) in the street.

Interestingly that was a weekly slip - week number 24 implying that the footballers can't wait until the end of the month for their salary. Perhaps they just go out and spend it all by the next weekend?

The weekly figure is obviously much closer to the yearly salaries of most people so we can more easily relate to these absolute numbers. If anything I think this is done by the media to heighten the outrage rather than play it down.

If the papers said a, "a milllion a year," much of the comparison would be lost and we would be more likely to mentally group foootballers with American sports professionals, pop stars, or successful business men.

We are used to pop stars, city traders etc being millionaires but the fact footballers used to earn weekly/yearly wages in line with rest of us a few decades ago seems to make them targets today.

At £120k gross, for Riise in 2006, that has to be a monthly pay slip. The week number just refers to the date salary was paid, i.e. in week 24 of the financial year.
