If you could change 1 rule in football

by soggy biscuit » 19 Jan 2010 11:09

You could try and rule out diving, you could try and sort out finances.

personally I think I would like to change the points system to a silimar system to Rugby Union, the point being that it would encourage attacking football.

Something like:

4 points for a win, 2 for a draw, 0 for a loss. 1 point for scoring 3 or more goals

too many to choose from:

salary cap
transfer cap
perhaps a %age of debt against your income as a club, to prevent debt getting out of hand
like the idea of a bonus point

Make it illegal for defenders to shepherd the ball out of play for a goal kick. Obstruction.

LOL

So its 1-1 with 10 mins left. Me thinks a lot of sides will settle for the 2 points.

What a shite system Soggy, bar the point for 3 goals. 2 draws = 1 win and 1 game lost so more sides will go for draws.

If you're going to try and encourage attacking play, then surely the only way to go about it is to introduce a points system in relation to the margin of victory? So if you win 3-0 you get three points, you win 7-4 you get three points, you win 1-0 you get one point. The losing team gets nothing. I haven't quite worked out what to do for draws yet though :|

I'd ban Sky and MOTD from endlessly wanking on about any slight controversial decision

what about 1 point for a draw, 2 points for a win plus 1 point for each margin of victory?

Trouble with that is that it may mean that promotions/titles are decided by results against weaker teams rather than results against fellow challengers.

(At least it would get rid of the "6 pointer" cliche)

No more staged transfer payments. All up front - either you can afford the player or not.

Yep I would say something like 1 point for a draw, 3 for a win by a one goal margin, 4 for a three goal margin, 5 for a five goal margin etc.

That would definitely sort out the (attacking) men from the boys.

Not a perfect system but it did take me around 30 seconds to think of!

I was talking to someone here about the London Irish loss at the weekend and how the royally f***ed up because of bonus points.

Maybe make the win 5 points or maybe the margin of victory thing that someone else mentioned would be better

3pts for a win
1pt for a draw
0pt for a lose
1pt if you score over 3 goals in a game (win or lose)

reinstate the rule Dirk bangs on about - to do with taking money out of the football club.

Of simply ban financing debt based on future revenue. Secure it on assets like a stadium, hotel, conference centre or training ground fine. At least those have a more fixed value and you aren't reliant on maintaining or improving on league position and current success.

2pts for a win, goalkeepers can handle packpasses, bring back terracing.

The rule that grates me is Players being sent off when conceeding penalties. Its a triple punishment (Pen, down to 10 and a ban) for 1 offence that only warrants a penalty.

Unless you deny a player a certain goal, eg handling on the line, it should be a Pen and a Yellow only. Even if a player is brought down when 1 on 1 with the keeper, a penalty is still a better chance of scoring and doesnt warrant a red.

But 'the way it was' used to be 30 yard screamers going in the top corner, but dissallowed because someone was a yard offside near the touchline. Not to mention the offside trap ruined games that you hardly see anymore. Easy to forget just how bad the old rule was, thats why it was changed.

Getting booked for celebrating...laughable rule. Completely anti-football.
