Arch The guy's fcukin' ancient. Will he stagger around with a zimmer frame? Ten years younger and I might be interested.

He's only 29 & we need more experienced heads. The worry for me is that Smith has only ever played well for Watford. He was not too successful at his other clubs.

I think he did fairly well at Derby and the difference this time is that he will not need to move his family.

Not sure where you get your figures, Ian

I reckon currently it's 27 and many of these will get better (so are not at their peak yet)

I just listed "premiership strikers" and got these, plus looked at the top 15 in the betting... average age was 27

Take out Saha and Shevchenko and it's stil near 27, and Cole, Jones, Defoe, Doyle all have birthdays between now and October

21 Bendtner
22 Jo
23 Agbonlahor
24 Kenwyne Jones (almost 25)
24 Rooney
25 Adebayor
25 Carlton Cole (almost 26)
25 Darren Bent
25 Kevin Doyle (almost 26)
25 Robhino
25 Tevez
25 Torres
26 Defoe (almost 27)
26 Eduardo
26 Van Persie
26 Yakubu
28 Andy Johnson
28 Arshavin
28 Crouch
28 Santa Cruz
29 Keane
29 Kuyt
30 Anelka
30 Bellamy
30 John Carew
30 Owen
31 Drogba
31 Heskey
31 Saha
32 Shevchenko

And he's looked about 35 for the last 10 years.

Clearly a done deal this, just waiting for Hunt to leave.

Now presumably they will play Smith wide, so that just leaves a striker with the money we have left plus whatever we may get for Harper/Bikey.

Looking like a bloody good summer. At least 3 signings who can improve the starting 11 (when could u say that last?!), possibly one more, plus a massive profit. The make do era is well and truly over....

And what's your source? Just your fevered imagination or something more substantial than that?

Sorry, but coming from a position of ignorance (which is my usual approach), and to paraphrase Monty Python :-

"What can Tommy Smith do for us?"

- Is he the lone striker that we need to convert the 400+ passes per game that we can expect under BR into goals?

- Is he the link that will enable 3 or 4 of our midfielders to score 10 to 15+ goals per season?

- Will playing under BR provide him with the comfort zone that previously he has only appeared to have found at Vicarage Road?

I think Rodgers played him wide a lot at Watford.

Rodgers sees him as the man to link the midfield to the attack I believe.

In which case do we have the players to score 30 to 40 goals from midfield? (Or is he likely to be in addition to the signing of a goalscorer?)

He'll want to sign a striker as well as Smith imo. Unless he sees McAnuff has his wide man, who's another player we've been linked with.

I'm sure there's a Watford fan who can tell us if Smith's better up on his own or wide in a five?
