At the moment we're changing the way we play, building a team, using our academy, bringing in decent signings in Bertrand and Mills and trying to move forward. Last year we tried to cling on to faint hope that the likes of Duberry could help us up and wasted a year.

But the public, drawn out nature of this fiasco was started off by Rodgers spouting off (and carried on by Rosso).

Wouldn't have happened under Coppell - we may well have lost out on potential targets but at least we benefitted by not knowing the gory details.

Nothing happened under Coppell for two years which is why we're in this mess.

There's an old saying that you never hang your dirty washing in public - hopefully Rodgers will take heed of this fiasco and keep his gob shut next time to let Squeaky et al do their stuff!

Just been reported on BBRB that press conference due at 5.45 was cancelled at last minute - Smith is talking to Pompey and Dellor believes (although not the greatest of truth in what he say some of the time) that Smith is to join Pompey

Some serious questions need to be asked TBH.

3 weeks ago we could have wrapped up the deal for £1.8million and he would have played 4 games already for us.

The details of the medical etc and having talks were out in the open, OK maybe not leaked by RFC, but still not handled well if personal terms not all tied up.

I only hope that the offer from Pompey and their current plight my put him off but at the end of the day it is a step up (Division) and would probably offer better wages so highly unlikely.

Still we must cut our cloth to our coat, which is rapidly looking like a waistcoat!!!!!

This is just another instalment which is the fiasco of Reading over recent months, particularly in the transfer market !! hopefully Smith will still be our player in the end, we have really got to get our asses in gear otherwise we will be left with what we have got come 5pm next Tuesday, and in reality that would be no surprise, and we can be pleasured with the "qoute of comfort" from both Hammond and the ego-monster, that we couldn't quite manage to complete the deal we trying to secure. But we will be safe in the knowledge that our cloth is not in the need of such cutting as it might have been!

PORTSMOUTH have hijacked Tommy Smith's proposed move to Reading at the 11th hour.

The Watford striker had reportedly passed his medical and agreed personal terms at the Madejski Stadium before the Premier League outfit came in with a late bid this afternoon which matched Reading's £1.8million offer.

The long-time Royals target is now believed to be heading to Fratton Park to discuss a move to the troubled South Coast club who entertain Hereford in the Carling Cup this evening (Tuesday).

Reading have refused to make any comment but Royals boss Brendan Rodgers, who had made no secret of his desire to bring the Watford striker to the Madejski Stadium, is expected to make a statement after tonight's Carling Cup clash against Barnsley.

The news will be a massive blow to Rodgers, who saw 29-year-old Smith as his number one transfer target.

It now leaves him with little time to persue alternatives before the September 1 transfer deadline.

There is still a slim chance Smith could reject Pompey and sign for the Royals.

Watford FC made the following statement on their website: "Watford can this evening (Tuesday) confirm the lcub has received and accepted an offer from Portsmouth for attacker Tommy Smith.

The Premiership side made their bid for the 29-year-old late on and it is now down to the player to decide upon a move to Fratton Park or Reading, after the Hornets had accepted an earlier bid from the Berkshire based club.

Smith will take no part in this evening's Carling Cup game with Leeds United due to the ongoing situation."

Smith's apparant 11th hour u-turn is the latest twist in a long-running transfer saga that has seen the Royals fight it out with Sheffield United for the services of the 29-year-old striker

We are back to the bad old days of Terry the Taxi - at least he had his first choice transfer in the hoops at this stage (and let's face it - he wasn't that bad really!)

This is a debacle - and I can't blame Watford for treating us with contempt - this should have been done and dusted weeks ago!
