Listening to Radio Berks last night reminded me of a player I'd forgotten recently, who might be a good target for us in the summer. Step forward Jay Rodriguez of Burnley.

He seems pretty sure to leave in the summer and has looked an excellent player this year. He's big, versatile and would have something to prove. A season or two learning from Roberts whilst competing for a place in the Premier League might be just what he needs. I could see him being a great partner for someone like Doyle or Long too, a younger and quicker Dave Kitson in some ways.

Another name that came to mind, as I think we're going to need a winger or two, was Aiden McGeady. He might be a bit out of our price range though after a good season or two in Russia.

Not in the Premiership. In this league yes every time.

Vaz Te isn't a bad shout, Tomkins as well. Rodriguez would be nice.

Vaz Te has a history of being trouble. Rodriquez would be handy.

Wow, two people I was thinking of. I dare say that Aiden would be well out of our price range though.

Vaz Tae is a bright spark in the West Ham team, and sure does like a header.

I think Jarvis might be a good one. Can play either side and seems to be the right kind of character.

Clyne would be nice, but with Cummings already here I'm not sure he'd be the right choice as they're too similar (in size, age and experience if not quite style - Connelly might be the better option). He's also been linked with Man Utd recently I think, but I'd agree he's a very good prospect and probably needs to move this year.

I still think Martin Petrov has another two seasons on him, and his delivery is just consistently superb.

Haven't posted here in ages but I thought I'd come up with a realistic list of transfers in and out:

Out:

Griffin
Gunnarsson
Howard
Baseya
Cywka
Manset
Tabb
MAYBE Church as we'd want room for new striker(s)

In:

Connolly
Doyle
Bannan
Brayford
Lee Wallace (as Rangers are bust so probably way cheaper than Bertrand, plus more likely to leave)
John Fleck on loan/permanent as he can cover every attacking position, another option would be
Possibly Hayden Mullins or another central midfielder, though I can't see Wittingham coming. Maybe a loan option from one of the top 4 teams
One shrewd signing that will surprise us all, attacking-minded midfielder
Cathcart

One ancient goalkeeper like someone else mentioned.

With this theory or whatever, our squad would be:

GK: Federici, Andersen, Old GK

LB: Mills, Wallace, Harte (width is needed, Mills could go on short-term loans with a call-back option)

CB: Pearce, Gorkss, Connolly, Cathcart, Jack Mills

RB: Brayford, Cummings, Connolly can cover

LM: Joseph Mills can cover, McAnuff, Fleck/loan signing, Obita

CM: Karacan, Mullins, Leggy, Bannan, loan signing

RM: Robson-Kanu, Kebe, Hunt can cover, Fleck/loan signing

ST: Roberts, Doyle, Le Fondre, Hunt

If only Kebe and McAnuff were 5 years younger...

Yes, he's a legend, but he's turning 37 in October and has only featured three or four times this season. We're still paying his wages, right? Move him into a coaching role, by all means, but he'd be taking up a spot in the 25-man squad for nothing if he'd continue his playing carreer here. You can't have players like that in the PL, regardless of his status. You need players who can realistically contribute with at least 10 games over a season.

Either way, his contract is up in a few months, and I think we all know that it won't be extended (as a player contract).

Too bad Carew can't even get on the West Ham bench, and it's not because of the "minor niggles" he keeps blaming it on either. Laziest player in English football.

Players I'd love to see in a Reading shirt next season...

Vicente from Brighton - 2004 La Liga Spanish Player of the Year, only 30 years old, I think going up with 4 wingers to choose from in Kebe, McAnuff, HRK and Vicente would be solid enough in the Premier League.

Jean Makoun from Aston Villa - Signed in Jan 11 for around £6m on a 3 year contract, but fell so out of favour when Houllier left that he got loaned out to Olympiacos for the whole of this season, 28 years old, would provide great cover/competition for Jem and Legs.

We also definitely need to sign a left back and a right back, I remember we were close to getting Wayne Bridge before he signed on loan for Sunderland, so that possibility could still be on the cards.

We'd also need a solid CB as cover for Porkss.

And a new striker, I'm sad to say that I don't think the Hunt/Roberts combo with Alf off the bench will get us enough goals at such a higher level... we need to do a Newcastle and sign an unfound gem ala Cisse and Ba...

Either way, I look forward to a summer with a new ridiculous rumour being posted at least every day :D
