Royal91 On a serious note if you look at the goalkeeping market, De Gea went for £25m I haven't seen any evidence to suggest McCarthy is any worse. The fact he is ENGLISH, under contract and demanding first team football should result in an extra few £££ added on.

A rare 'greed from me

+1

£4m? I'd hate to see him go and want him to be our number 1. But even I'd sell him for that much. He's a 'keeper ffs.

£25m.

Newcastle want McCarthy, says the Daily Mail. Nice little bidding war building up possibly?

Reckon he's gonna go. His agent spent two hours chatting to Liverpool after our game with them. No offers yet, but surely just a matter of time.

Just found this on the LUFC forum, made me chuckle

Smudger179:
Im sure we will be linked with a load of Reading players this summer!!

sheepy:
Too true, and although we don't need him, I'll have their keeper who we had on loan. His name escapes me though, Alex McCarthy?

Good luck with that!

My guess is that sadly we'll have bugger all chance of keeping him unless it is made quite clear he is no.1 and the PL clubs trailing him can't offer any more than the bench at best. Even then if the club is someone like Liverpool then we'll still have bugger all chance. But at least it looks like we may get mega bucks for him if all this interest is true...

Best make the most of his remaining games for us this season....

Why would we sell and loan back Federici?

Cobi £4m would be a joke. He's under contract, he wants and will get first team football next season, so unless we get something like £8m then everyone can politely fcuk off.

why politely?

Liverpool want him. Newcastle want him. Next you will be telling me that Leeds want him. Or Crawley.

Thing AM has over long is the fact he is English, that alone bumps up the asking price. Clubs love to have English players

No GK is worth that much. Yet.

AM would fetch a couple of mill right now.

Wouldn't worry. He won't be going anywhere.

Don't have to sell him. And won't.

Goalkeepers play pivotal roles and should be worth just as much as top strikers

How much did United pay for De Gea? Didn't Buffon go for £25m or something donkeys years ago? Craig Gordon even went for the best part of £10, although that was probably Roy Keane doing the spending so might not count!

I can't remember a decent side that didn't have a top top keeper and, although you don't get as many moving for silly money like centre forwards, the best ones still attract good money.

McCarthy is the big worry for me this summer. I really want to watch him develop at Reading and for the club to reap the benefits of bringing though a real talent. My fear is he'll do an Ashdown and move too soon and miss out in the long run.

No reason to sell, get rid of Federici instead in the summer and let McCarthy help us back up next season - he'll be worth even more if that's the case.

My fear isn't that we'll want or need to sell, it's that McCarthy will attract attention and want to go.

If, for example, Liverpool come in for him and offer decent money to both him and the club, plus European football and a real chance to dislodge Reina (if he stays) in the next 18 months then he may well want to go. If he wants to go then the club will reluctantly let him go and take the money.

You raise a good point about Ashdown - the thing is, McCarthy's only 23 so realistically even if he stays with us for a year and then moves he still has 15 years plus at the top level...it's different for outfielders, but surely it makes sense for him to stay somewhere where he's guaranteed to play, maybe win a league medal and then progress?
